Sister Georgina Is Newest Student
on Campus of Hebrew University

The newest student on the campus of Hebrew University,
Sister Georgina, brushes up on her Hebrew in the company
of two fellow students by readjng the daily Israeli news-
paper, Haaretz.

Sister Georgina is Something
of a celebrity on the Campus of
the Hebrew University at Givat
Ram. Jerusalem. She is the first
nun to enroll as a student at the
university; however, since her
arrival some weeks ago, all but
a few inquisitive stares have
turned into smiles of recogni-
tion, thanks to her engaging per-
sonality and her ability to con-
verse fluently in Hebrew. En-
glish, French and German.
Languages come naturally to
Sister Georgina. Born in Alsace,
in the Franco-German border re- I
gion, she grew up knowing both'.
French and German. On joining
the Order of Notre Dame de
Sion she also studied English,
Latin and Italian, and during .
her stay at the Order's convent
in Strasbourg she was able to
graduate from the famous uni-
versity in that city.
After serving for a 'time in
Tunis — "not long enough to
study Arabic"—Sister Georgina
asked to be sent to Israel to ful-
fill her life-long wish of coming
to the Land of the Bible.
No sooner had she arrived at
Ein Karem, the birthplace of
St. John the Baptist, than she
joined the Hebrew language
Ulpan in the village where, in
addition to herself and two oth-
er nuns, the class was made up
entirely of new immigrants.

As soon as she fe$ she had
acquired a sufficient 'command
of the language, Sister Georgina
went to Givat Ram to enroll as
a student in, the Institute of
Jewish Studies.
"In Israel every man, woman
and _ child, cleric anti layman,
lives through the pages of the
Bible. The historical Associations
are present everyvihere. It is
wonderful that there is an insti-
tution in Jerusalem devoted to
the academic study of the
Bible." she said.
Sister Georgina confide§ that
as her Hebrew is not yet quite
up to standard, she chose some
of the "easier" Bible courses.
She is confident, however, that
she will soon be able to over-
come the handicap. and to en-
roll for the more advanced
courses next year.
Preoccupation with Biblical
studies has not closed Sister
Georgina's eyes to the accom-
plishments of modern Israel.
She is full of admiration for the
development of the country in
the face of all obstacles.
Some days ago, she recalled:
she visited the border area at
Ramat Rachel and looked over
into Jordan. "It was like glanc-
ing into the romantic world of
the Middle Ages. Still. I was
happy to stay on the side of the
20th century."

BERLIN, (JTA) — Public
life in the West German Fed-
eral Republic is being re-Nazi-
fied quietly and without any
resistance, Heinz Galinski. chair-
man of the Berlin Jewish com-
munity, asserted here.
Addressing a public meeting
devoted to Christian-Jewish rap-
proachment, the Jewish leader
warned that with the return to
important roles in the life of
the country of the most prom-
inent representatives of Nation-
al Socialism, democratic forces
in West Germany were being
forced into isolation as they
were during the Weimar Repub-
lic which gave way to the Hitler
regime. -
Galinski demanded an effec-
tive `.:purification" of the admin.
ristration of justice, public in-
struction. industry and political
life, with the removal from posi-
tions of power of men who had
been guilty of crimes under the
Hitler regime.
Erich Luth, who first organ-
ized the German movement for
rapprochement with the Jews
and with the State of Israel,
told the meeting that the Jew-
ish problem would continue to
be an important one in Ger-
many. Large elements of the
German population, he said con-
tinue to maintain a shocking in-
difference to the Nazi regime's
extermination of the Jews.
