Anti-Semitic Agitator, Ontario Jews Fight
Linked with Atlanta's
Religious Teaching
Bombing, Writes Nasser in Public Schools

WASHINGTON, ( J T A ) —
George L. Rockwell, a Washing-
ton area anti - Semitic agitator
linked with a suspect in the
bombing last October of the Jew-
ish Temple in Atlanta, Ga.; was
found to have communicated
this month with President Nas-
ser of the United Arab Repub-
lic.
Rockwell had participated in
anti-Jewish demonstrations that
included picketing of the White
House and simultaneous picket-
ing in Atlanta. (Both picket at-
tempts flopped when the plac-
ard-carrying marchers were
completely ignored.)
It was previously revealed
that Rockwell received financial
support from wealthy Harold N.
Arrowsmith, Jr., of Baltimore.
According to information that
emerged here recently, Arrow-
smith may now be in contact
with Salem Bader, head of the
so-called "Arab-Asian Institute,"
an anti-Israel propaganda front.
It was reported that photo-
graphs of anti-Jewish picketing
operations in which Rockwell
figured have been forwarded to
Cairo, and Rockwell's photo,
with flattering captions, has ap-
peared in Cairo newspapers.

Zionists, Herut, Mizrachi
Coalition Viewed by Saphir

NEW YORK, (AJP) — Ex-
pressing confidence at the out-
come of the 1959 Israel general
elections to be held in the Fall,
Joseph Saphir told newsmen at
a ZOA press conference at the
organization's headquarters that
he would not oppose a strong
opposition front, composed of
General Zionists Herut and
'.114izrachi, in the battle for gov-
ernmental power in the forth-
coming elections. ,
Saphir, former Israel Mini-
ster of Communications declar-
ed that the main fight will be
on economic issues.

TORONTO, (JTA) — Jew-
ish objections to the teaching
of religion in the public schools
of Ontario were clarified in a
statement made public by Syd-
ney M. Harris, leader in the
Bnai Brith and the Canadian
Jewish Congress here. He de-
nied that Jews were seeking
minority rule or the ousting
of the concept of a divinity
from the school system. The
objection of the Jewish com-
munity was to teaching of a
single religion on school time
and money.
A suggestion had publicly
been made that "Jews should
be proud of their faith and
have their children stand up
and leave" before the classes
on religious instruction begin.
Mr. Harris stated that "as an
adult he would be proud to
withdraw. But it is not easy
for a six or seven-year-old to
be • a martyr for something
abOut which he is just begin-
ning to learn. We are worried
about the psychological scars
it leaves on our youngsters."
Pointing to the 44 approved
prayers in the official book of
regulations, Mr. Harris said
that all but five include the
name of Christ and could not
honestly be used by non-Christ-
ians. He also complained that
some teachers approach the
subject of religious instruction
in the classes "with a religious
and evangelistic fervor that
causes distress in Jewish
homes."
