intensified fears of subversion
made a difference in our esti-
mate of the American "radi-
cals" who fought to expand
freedom in the past? This is a
question to ponder in light of
the forthcoming publication of
former Detroiter Charles A.
Madison's forthright "Critics &
Crusaders: A Century of Amer-
ican Protest," in a new en-
larged edition.
When Madison's book was
issued in 1947 it was received
favorably by reviewers in all
parts of the country. It was
praised highly as a stimulating,
sympathetic study of the non-
women, who led the struggle
show sponsored by the Depart-
ment of Michigan Jewish War
Veterans and its Ladies Auxil-
iary, will be presented on Sun-
day evening, at the Ford audi-
torium.

NEW YORK (AJP) — The
1959 Justice Louis D. Brandeis
Awards of the Jewish Forum
were presented to the Mayor
of the City of New York, Rob-
ert F. Wagner, Jr., and six out-
standing personalities — Carlos
L. Israels, Dr. Henry Raphael
Gold, Justice Birdie Amster-
dam, Charles H. Silver, Ambas-
sador of Panama; George W.
Westerman, Floyd ,Chamer, Dr.
Bela Shick and Louis J. Glick-
man at City Hall here.
The renowned surgeon, Dr.
Harry Cohen, chairman of the
Jewish Forum Associates,
opened the ceremony with an
introductory address in which
he gave the history of the
Award which was originally
made in honor of the late Prof.
Albe rt Einstein.
Officiating at the presenta-
tion ceremony were Susan
Brandeis and Dr. Isaac Rosen-
garten, editor of the Jewish
Forum.

Soviet Jews Now
Reside in Israel
TEL AVIV (JTA) — Some
5,700 Jews have arrived in
Israel from the Soviet Union,
among a total of 360,000 from
the Communist states of East-
ern Europe, Premier David
Ben-Gurion told a meeting of
the Histadrut's council in
preparation for the labor move-
ment's ninth national conven-
tion of Histadrut.
Foreign Minister Golda Meir,
who also addressed the session,
called on Israel's Jewry to take
the lead in absorbing the
present group of 'immigrants
and all future waves.

No Chance for Appeal
on Rupture of Oil Pact
JERUSALEM (JTA) — The
rejection by the Moscow Cham-
ber of Commerce Arbitration
Tribunal of Israel's claim for
compensation in the rupture of
an oil supply agreement was
final and cannot be appealed,
Israel's Foreign Minister Golda
Meir told Parliament before she
left for the United States, where
she is now on a speaking tour.
She said there was no pos-
sibility of an appeal to the
International Court of Justice
at The Hague on this matter.
The Soviet export agency
abruptly cancelled the oil
supply agreement/ with Israel
immediately after the start of
• the Sinai campaign.

Rises in ADL on
Integration Issue
MIAMI (JTA) — An intense
debate on the role of the
Anti-Defamation League in re-
lation to integration was one
of the chief features of a
Florida-wide meeting of ADL
leaders in West Palm Beach.
After the debate, in which

publishing firm—he is chief
college editor of Henry Holt
& Company—has added a chap-
ter on the New Deal era and
the McCarthyite period that
followed World War II, as well
as studies of three intransigent
New Dealers—the late Senator
George W. Norris, father of
TVA; Henry A. Wallace; and
Justice Hugo L. Black. Photo-
graphs of all the "critics and
crusaders" have also been
added.

towards JWV activities in the
fields of veteran hospitaliza-
tion, aid and support. Israeli

Einstein's Son Receives
Civil Engineering Prize
LOS ANGELES (JTA)—Dr.
Hans Albert Einstein, son of
the late Albert Einstein, was
awarded a research prize by the
American Society of Civil En-
gineers yesterday for his con-
tribution to "knowledge of
transportation of sediment in
flowing water."
Dr. Einstein, a member of
the staff of the University of
California, was one of four en-
gineers honored at the annual
convention of the Society.
