Eminent Israeli Photographer
Thrills Groups Here With His
Slides of Holy Land's History

On a brief visit here last
week, Efrem Ilani, of Jerusa-
lem, one of Israel's most distin-
guished photographers, who is
associated with the Israel Bond
Office in Jerusalem, thrilled
several small groups with his il-
lustrated talks on the history of
Palestine and the recent prog-
ress made in the new State of
Israel.
Guest here of Mr. and Mrs.
Isadore Arnold Berger. whom
he hosted in his home when they
visited Israel last year, he
showed his color slides and
spoke of ancient as well as mod-
ern history in the former Pales-
tine and the present Israel.
Born in Germany July 26.
1910, son of Russian parents,
Ilani joined the Zionist move-
ment at the age of 6. He was
graduated from high school in
Germany and studied in a trade
school as a precision mechanic
and worked for 12 years at the
trade in Germany.
Ile immigrated to Palestine in
1934, spent two years building
irrigation pumps, joined the
Haganah movement and served
for 11 years in the Palestine po-
lice force. He trained watch
dogs for use in defense of Jew-
ish settlements.

tional and charitable institu-
tions.
Born in Sierpc. Russian Po-
land. Feb. 26, 1889. Mr. Lieb-
son came to the United States
on Dec. 10, 1910.
• He was married to Helen S.
Auslander, Oct. 3. 1915. They
have two children. Mrs. A. B.
(Jeanette) Miller and Mrs. S.
R. (Diane) Colton: eight -grand-
children and one great-grand-
child.

and was taken into the home of
the great Zionist leader. Mena-

Mr. Liebson was one of the
early pioneers in Palestine. He
worked closely with the pres-
ent Prime Minister and Presi-
dent of Israel, David Ben-
Gurion and Itzhak Ben-Zvi.

estine from 1907 to 1909.
He traveled extensively in Eu-
rope. Mexico and South Ameri-
ca and wrote of his travels in
a book which was circulated
privately among his personal
friends.

Student from Morocco
Wins Semitics Prize

Henry Toledano, a student
from Morocco, has been named
to receive the Adele Mondry
Prize. given to the Wayne State
University pupil who has proved
himself outstanding in Semitic
studies.
Toledano. of 3246 Fullerton,
is a senior in the college of lib-
eral arts. He arrived in the
United States in 1949 from
North Africa with no knowledge
of English.
From 1950 to *52. he studied
to receive his high school diplo-
ma. then returned to Morocco
for 15 months. He came back
here and entered Wayne State
Universit y as a history major.
When the department of Se-
mitic languages and literature
was opened in 1954. he declared
a second field of concentration
in Semitics. T o I e d a n o also
teaches full-time in the United
Hebrew Schools.
The Mondry prize is given by
Mrs. Harry Mondry. a 1958 grad-
uate of WSU. who is now attend-
ing the university's graduate
school. She also is the donor of
other scholarships to the uni-
versity.
