The year 1959 will present
a test case for the validity of
Zionism, according to Dr. Dov
Beigun, secretary of the Na-
tional Committee for Labor
Israel.
Speaking at a banquet this
week celebrating the 25th anni-
versary of Farband Arlazaroff
Branch 137, Dr. Beigun said
that the failure of Israel to be
able to receive the Jews of
the mass exodus from Romania
would result in the bankruptcy
of the Zionist ideal. He said that
although the sums needed for
the absorption of the Romanian
immigrants is staggering — it
must be raised. The contribu-
tions which must be asked of
all Jews everywhere are not
a matter of seeking charity
for refugees elsewhere in the
world, but rather a request
that each Jew contribute to
his own history—the history of
the Jews.
Dr. Beigun said that an
Arlazaroff Cultural House was
being established in Kiriat
Borochev in recognition of the
Branch's devoted service. He
presented the Branch with a
certificate of commendation.
Meyer Brown, national presi-
dent of Farband was given a
plaque on behalf of the Branch
by general chairman Harry
Schumer. Brown was honored
on the occasion of his 70th
birthday.
Looking hack over the years,
Brown noted that the current
crisis in the Romanian Aliyah
movement could not be ig-
nored. Ile recalled the conse-
quences of the slighted warn-
ings given before the Hitler
catastrophe. He praised the
Arlazaroff record of support
for all communal and Zionist
causes — 58,000,000 in its 25
years of existence. a record un-
matched by any comparable
group. He called for a re-
dedication to the future on
the occasion of a celebration
of the past.
Tribute was paid to the
memory of the branch's name-
sake. Victor Hayim Arlazaroff
and to Joseph Sprinzak, speaker
of the Knesset who died re-
cently (see -Purely Commen-
tary" column in last week's
Jewish News).
Humorist Shinuel Fisher and
soprano-pianist team Sarah and
Hayim Fershko provided the
evening's entertainment.
