THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS—Friday, February 13, 1959-6 • Exemplary Action: Detroit Jewry Commended By BORIS SMOLAR Editor, Jewish Telegraphic Agency Detroit Jewish leadership--one of the best in the country—has done it again . . . It has shown other Jewish communities how to react speedily and generously to the emergency that has now arisen in bringing the Romanian Jews to Israel . . . The first gathering of about 100 donors to the Detroit Allied Campaign brought $2,000,000 in pledges to the 1959 drive . . . Due credit for this exem- plary action should be given to such Detroit Jewish leaders as Max M. Fisher, Irwin I. Cohn, Paul Zuckerman and Judge Theodore Levin . . . From my personal meet- ings with these fine men I know how they have their heart and soul in Jewish causes, local, national and over- seas . . . Detroit has acquired the reputation of a city of pace-setters in American Jewish philanthropic efforts also because of such men as Justice Henry Butzel, C. William Sucher, Leonard N. Simons, A. Alfred Taubman, the brothers Al and Tom Borman. Joseph 0. Lefton, Richard Sloan and others . . . Not to speak of the fact that Detroit is fortunate to have Isidore Sobeloff, one of the very best executives in American Jewish community life . . . Sobeloff's expert opinions and advice on com- munal affairs influence not only Jewish community life in Detroit. but also Jewish philanthropic planning on a nationwide scale . . . It is no coincidence that Detroit has always the largest delegation on the Study Missions which the UJA sends every year to Europe and Israel to study Jewish needs there . . . The Detroit Jewish community is to me perhaps the warmest Jewish com- munity in the country . . . I have never resided in De- troit, but I always had a great admiration for the Jewish leadership there ... Detroit is also fortunate to have one of the best English-Jewish newspapers in the country, the Jewish News . . It's able editor and publisher, Philip Slomovitz, contributes no little to stimulating in- terest in Jewish affairs, thus enriching Jewish life in the community . . . Endorse Katz for President of Bnai Brith NEW ORLEANS (JTA)- Label A. Katz, of New Or- leans, nationally known Jewish leader and currently chairman of the Bnai Brith Youth Com- mission, was unanimously en- dorsed as a candidate for na- tional president of Bnai Brith by the executive committee of District Grand Lodge No. 7, which is composed of seven Southern states. The resolution endorsing Katz' candidacy was adopted by the executive committee at its meeting held in New Orleans. Philip Klutznick, present Bnai Brith president, has an- nounced that he will not run for another term. Describing Katz as "one of the out- , standing n a - tional leaders on the Ameri- can Jewish scene today," Robert Banks, Bnai Brith dis- trict presi- den t, said; that "t here are few who possess such rich and var- Label Katz i e d back- ground of top level experience in Jewish affairs as does Mr. Katz." He cited as evidence Katz' membership on the Na- tional Cabinet of the United Mr. Smolar's 'Regular Weekly "Between You and Me" Column Jewish Appeal, the executive committee of the National on Page 26 Council of Jewish Federations and Welfare Funds, and na- tional chairman of the Bnai Ben-Gurion Blasts Brith Youth Commission in which capacity he is serving Pasternak Book Act to Check West German Anti-Semitism DUSSELDORF, Germany (JTA)—The Central Council of Jews in Germany an- nounced it would create a bureau to register and investi- gate all anti-Semitic develop- ments reported in West Ger- many. The recent anti-Semitic wave, the Council said, had not brought about any basic changes in the general situa- tion. The political factors in- volved in the situation had repeatedly been pointed out by the Council, the Council noted. To overcome these fac- tors, it continued, would re- quire not only additional leg- islation but an educational pro- gram in schools, universities and in the press and on the radio. Both children and adults must be made aware of the facts of Nazi persecution of the Jews, it stressed. The Minister of the Interior of North Rhine-Westphalia, Dr. W. Dufhues, announced today that he had set up a special police unit to study anti-Jew- ish excesses. He added that provincial Ministers of the In- terior were unanimous in de- manding strong measures to suppress anti-Semitic out- bursts. However, Dr. Dufhues denied that the anti-Semitism of the postwar era was in any sense organized. He said some of it was very likely the work of r i g h t-wing ultra-nationalist groups, but they were rela- tively unimportant. Noting that the chief suspect in the recent desecration of the Dusseldorf synagogue was a member of the Communist Party, he said that it was possible "certain forces are trying to discredit the West German Republic abroad by stirring up anti- Semitism here." TEL AVIV (JTA) — Pre- mier David Ben G u r i on labelled Boris Pasternak's novel "Dr. Zhivago" one of the most despicable books about Jews ever written by a man of Jewish origin." He added that it was "a pity that such a book should come from a man who had the courage to defy his own gov- ernment." The Premier said that in Dr. Zhivago" a man who has been a Jew and has been "converted to Christianity dared ask why the Jews are unassimilated." He added that this man "became the torch bearer of Christen- dom." Honors Vienna Jewish Leader VIENNA (JTA)—President Adolf Schaerf announced the designation of Wilhelm Krell, executive director of the Vien- na Jewish community, as a member of the Austrian Privy Council. Herr Krell played a leading role in obtaining con- cessions from the Austrian Government in the indemnifi- cation of the Jews of Austria for losses they suffered under the Nazi regime.
