Council of Orthodox Rabbis Slates
21st Anniversary Banquet, March 3

Meeting last week at the home
of Probate Judge Ira G. Kauf-
man, the organizing committee
for the 21st anniversary dinner
of the Council of Orthodox
Rabbis issued a call to all con-
gregations in the area of Great-
er Detroit to be represented at
the Council's 21st anniversary

banquet.
Judge Kaufman is honorary
chairman of the banquet, to be
held at 6 p.m., March 3, in the
Mayfair Room, 19161 Schaefer.
In issuing a statement to local

congregations, the committee
urged "that the ties of a united
religious com-
munity be
strengthened."
All presidents
and congrega-
tional officers
were urged to
assist in mak-
ing the eve-
ning a success.
The Council,
Judge Kaufman or Vaad Hara-
bonim, was organized 21 years
ago to improve the standards
of maintaining kashrut. Even
then, it was impossible for an
individual rabbi to accomplish
this purpose.
Today, the Vaad functions to
assure that every Jew, who so
desires, may adhere to religious
principles. It also coordinates
the religious, spiritual and cul-
tural 'activities of the tradition-
al elements of the community.
The rabbis who constitute
membership in the Council vol-

unteer their time, most of them
having congregations which in-
sist that standards and practices
of Jewish law be maintained
vigilantly.
The dinner is one of a few
sources of funds for the Vaad,
which needs revenue to cover
the costs of a variety of ex-
penses entailed in operating the
group. This includes mashgi-
chim and other personnel who
devote full-time to this work
and other administrative needs.
A few years ago, under the
chairmanship of newly re-elect-
ed president, David J. Cohen,
a group of lay leaders joined
with the Council, and organized
the Merkaz.
This group coordinates ac-
tivities of traditional syna-
gogues, and also co-sponsors the
annual Council dinner. Cohen
is chairman of the steering corn-
mittee for the banquet on March
3.
Principal speaker will be
Rabbi Pinchos M. Teitz, founder
and lecturer of the Talmudic
Seminar of the Air.
