New Works by
Cantor Fenakel
at Feb. 8 Concert

Two new compositions by
Cantor Nicholas Fenakel will
be introduced to the Detroit
public at the ninth annual Fes-
tival of Jewish Music sponsored
by Ades Shalom Synagogue at
8 p.m., Feb. 8, in the main
sanctuary.
"R'tzeh" will be a solo num-
ber sung by the cantor, while
his "Haneros Halolu" will be
presented a s

d o n, soprano
who is a mem-
ber of t h e
New York
Civic Opera.

ber by Paul
Cantor Fenakel Olefsky, prin-
cipal cellist with the Detroit
Symphony Orchestra. He will
play, for the first time in De-
troit, an instrumental version of
the Kol Nidre.
Accompanying Olefsky a n d
playing other numbers, as well,
will be the Adas Shalom Sym-
phony Ensemble, under the ba-
ton of Zinovi Bistritzky. The
symphonic group is the only
one of its kind in Detroit and
was the first ensemble organ-
ized by a congregation in the
country.
Also included on the eve-
ning's program will be a decla-
mation of Psalm 149 by Gert-
rude Strauss. talented television
actress, and a piano solo by
Henry Shevitz, youthful mem-
ber of the congregation. Several
choral works are to be offered
by the youth choir, directed
by Shimon Gewirtz.
Both of Cantor Fenakel's new
works are taken from the He-
brew prayerbook and set to
original music.

Evergreen Congregation
to Start Daily Services

Starting with this Sunday
morning, the Evergreen Jewish
Cong. will hold daily services
in its new synagogue. The serv-
ices will begin at 7:15 a.m.,
Mondays and Thursday; at 7:30
a.m., Tuesday. Wednesday and
Friday, and at 8:30 a.m., Sun-
days.
Also being inaugurated is a
monthly late Friday night sex -v-
ice, to be followed by a social
hour. The late services will in-
clude congregational singing.
English readings and a sermon
by Rabbi Hyman Agress.
The community is invited to
attend all services of the syna-
gogue, located on Evergreen,
just north of 7 Mile Rd.

Theater Benefit

anniversary banquet of Young
Israel of Detroit, a benefit thea-
ter performance of "My Fair
Lady" will be presented on both
Feb. 12 and Feb. 21, at the
Riviera Theater.
Announcement was made by
David I. Berris, who has been
named chairman of the anniver-
sary committee by Dr. Harry
Portnoy, Young Israel president.
The banquet will be held in
May.
