`Shamed' Nazi Admits
Guilt in Confession
BONN. (JTA) - A written
confession signed by Wilhelm
Schubert, in which the former
Sachsenhausen camp guard ad-
mitted he might have been
guilty of the murders of Jewish
and political prisoners, created
a minor sensation when it was
read at the trial of Schubert and
his fellow-guard, Gustav Sorge.
Prior to the reading of the
confession. Schubert had em-
phatically and consistently de-
nied prosecution witness testi-
mony that he had beaten and
killed camp inmates. In the con-
fession, the former guard ad-
mitted that "things might have
happened the way the prosecu-
tion claims." but added that he
could not "remember actual de-
tails."
He also said'in the confession
that he had called prosecution
witnesses "liars" and "Jewish
conspirators" becaUse he felt
"ashamed" of the acts he did
remember committing.

has expanded its orthopedic sur-
gery department to accommo-
date children who have been
awaiting surgery for two to
three years.
This was announced by Dr.
Kalman J. Mann, director-gen-
eral of the HMO, who disclosed
that Hadassah. the Women's
Zionist Organization of America,
and WIZO. the Women's Inter-
national Zionist Organization.

'58 Leo Baeck Awards
DUSSELDORF. German y,
( JTA ) - The 1958 Leo Baeck
Prize for literature was award-
ed to three writers living in
Britain. Switzerland and Ger-
many. The prize. awarded an-
nually by the Central Council
of Jews in Germany and the
Central Charitable Association
of Jews in Germany, in mem-
ory of the late Chief Rabbi of
Berlin, amounted to 3,000
marks.
The recipients were Dr. H.
G. Adler. of London. whose
second volume on the Theres-
ienstadt concentration camp has
just appeared: Dr. Ernst Ehr-
lich of Basle. one of Dr.
Baeck's last students and au-
thor of studies of ancient Jew-
ish history: and Erwin Sylvan-
us, of Voellinhausen. West-
phalia, whose play about a-
physician in the Warsaw Ghet-
to, - Korczak and the Children,"
will shortly be produced in 30
German and European thea-
ters.
