Fund for the Republic Gets AJ Congress Award
The Fund for the Republic '
received the annual award of
the Manhattan Division of the
American Jewish Congress for
its "untiring efforts to 'proclaim
liberty throughout the land.' "
Elmo Roper, chairman of the
hoard of the Fund for the Re-
public, and Dr. Robert Hutchins,
president, accepted the award, a
shofar mounted on a wooden
plaque.

dinner, which will be given in honor of
Probate Court Judge Nathan J. Kaufman,
will be held at 6 p.m., Jan. 4, at the
Sheraton-Cadillac Hotel. Funds obtained
will provide scholarships for students at
the New York school, which now has an
enrollment of nearly 4,000 students in
its undergraduate and graduate schools
and its Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Bar-Ilan Dinner on Jan. 21 Aims
to Link Israel with Detroiters;
Honors Planned for Stollmans
Phillip Stollman, president of
Detroit Mizrachi-Hapoel Hamiz-
rachi, this week announced that
elaborate plans are being made
for the annual dinner in sup-
port of Bar-Ilan University in
Israel sponsored by Mizrachi.
This year's event, which will
be addressed by a nationally
prominent speaker, and which
will feature leading Detroit
musicians in a specially-arrang-
ed program, will be held on
Jan. '21, in the new social hall
of Congregation Bnai David,
24350 Southfield.
Irving W. Schiussel, for-
mer president of Detroit
Mizrachi and an active lead-
er in the movement in sup-
port of Bar-Ilan University,
stated this week that the
Jan. 21 dinner will be util-
ized to honor the Stollman
Brothers—Phillip and Max—
who are, respectively, chair-
man and treasurer of the
American Bar-Ilan Commit-
tee, in recognition of their
services to Israel, Mizrachi
and Bar-Ilan.
"The Stollmans have rend-
ered great services to Israel,
to the religious Zionist move-
ment, to the Jewish National
Fund, to the Allied Jewish
Campaigns and other move-
ments, and we desire to extend
to them a measure of our
esteem at the forthcoming din-
ner," Schlussel said.

Ilan University, Stollman stated
this week that the aim of this
year's dinner, which will cele-
brate the first commencement
of the university, is to link the
interest of American Jewry in
cultural undertakings with high-
er learning in Israel.
"Our specific aim here is to
link Detroit with Israel through
our special Bar-Ilan projects,"
Stollman said. He expressed the
hope that a larger number of
Detroiters than ever before will
attend the dinner on Jan. 21
and will participate in the Bar-
Ilan activities with their gen-
erosity.

Dr. Dubnove Sets
Up Loan Fund at
Bar-Ilan, Israel
Dr. Aaron Dubnove, promin-
ent Detroit physician and noted
Hebrew scholar • and author,
has set up a free loan fund for
students at Bar-Ilan University
in Israel, it was announced this
week by Detroit Mizrachi-
Hapoel Hamizrachi.
Upon his establishment of
this fund, Dr. Dubnove men-
tioned his years of studies in
American universities and the
importance he attaches to as-
sistance that must be given to
needy students.
Since the inception of Bar-
Ilan University, Dr. Dubnove
has taken a deep interest in
the Mizrachi-sponsored higher
institution of learning.
A special certificate will be
presented to Dr. Dubnove at
the forthcoming local celebra-
tion of the first commencement
of Bar-Ilan University, at the
dinner at the new social hall
of Bnai David, on Jan. 21.
Yeshiva U. Graduate School
Gets $49,000 Science Grant
NEW YORK, (JTA)—Yeshi-
va University's Graduate School
of Mathematical Sciences, has
been awarded a research grant
of $49,400 by the National Sci-
ence Foundation. The three-
year-project will be under the
direction of Prof. Leo Zippin
and Prof. Harry E. Rauch, both
of the graduate school faculty.
