The statement does allow for
a Christmas tree to be placed in
the school lobby, but specifical-
ly states that it shall be "dec-
orated with non-religious sym-
bols."
The one questionable fea-
ture of the statement is the
leeway allowed to the class-
room teacher, which, accord-
ing to modern trends in edu-
cation is good in itself, but
calls for watchfulness.
As a professional, the teacher
is charged with the responsibil-
ity of:
1. Understanding the sensitiv-
ity of each individual student
in the area of religion:
2. Using holidays as opportun-
ities for developing understand-
ings of the divergent beliefs
prevalent in the community and
throughout the world; and
3. Determining the best ways
of making holidays an educa-
tional experience by (a) using
children's ideas as much as pos-
sible in planning the total pro-
gram; and (b) cooperating with
room mothers in planning pro-
grams.
The statement recognizes
many of the factors J e w i s h
groups have been working for
in the past, and especially im-
pressive is the basic recognition
of separation of church and
state.
In an introductory note, the
framers of the policy recognize
that "the teacher is a most im-
portant person in questions re-
lating to religion." Not every
teacher, however, is qualified,
and personal prejudice must en-
ter into discussions at various
times.
But the entire policy state-
ment assumes that there are
problems of religion if it is
taught in the classroom, and
this is ah important step.
