Mr. and Mrs. Irwin Maniloff and children, Shari and Paul,
of 23081 Radclift, Oak Park, have recently returned from Ocean
Side, N.Y., where they attended the Bar Mitzvah of their nephew
and cousin, Steven Maniloff, son of Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Maniloff.
Dr. Kenneth L. Shmarak, a post-graduate scholarship student
at Columbia University school of dentistry, will be home this
weekend to spend a two-week holiday vacation with his parents,
Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Shmarak, of 8130 Freda.
Mr. and Mrs. Edward Zeliman left for a 12-day visit in Los
Angeles where they will participate in the 30th wedding anni-
versary celebration of their brother and sister-in-law, Dr. and
Mrs. Edward Robbins, former Detroiters.
Mr. Ben Aiges of Brooklyn, N.Y., is visiting his son and
daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Stanley L. Aiges, of LaSalle
Blvd.
On the occasion of their 25th wedding anniversary, Mr. and
Mrs. Max 0. Beal, of 13700 Vassar, were honored with a party at
the Wonder Bar, given by Mr. and Mrs. Moe Saslove and Mr. and
Mrs. Harry B. Park. Mr. and Mrs. Beal were married in Detroit
and have both been active in local causes. Mrs. Beal in Women's
American ORT and Mr. Beal in Bnai Brith. Mosaic Lodge, F. &
A.M. and the Allied Jewish Campaign. The couple is leaving
today for a Caribbean cruise in celebration of their anniversary.

to Host Convention

Wayne Students
Announce Betrothed

Members of the local chap-
ter of Kappa Nu fraternity, on
the campus of Wayne State
University, will play host to
the fraternity's three-day na-
tional convention, Dec. 26-28,
at the Statler-Hilton Hotel.
Pre-registration will take
place on Dec. 25, with the
first meeting planned at 9:30
p.m., that night. Alumni from
Wayne, Michigan and Michigan
State Universities also will at-
tend the parley.
Kappa Nu, founded in 1911
on the campus of Rochester
University, became a national
fraternity in 1917. There are
15 affiliated chapters, and its
membership numbers over
4,000.

In a game played last Friday,
Mustang Cagers defeated South-
western, 60-42. This is the first
time since the middle of the
1956-57 season that Mumford
has won. In the third period, the
Mustangs boosted a 23-21 half-
time lead to win the game. High
scorer for Mumford was Mike
Kukes with 17 points. Today
the team plays its first home
game against Cass Tech at
3:30 p.m.
Four days of fun are in store
for 350 BBYO conventioners at
the Michigan Regional Conven-
tion, Dec. 25 to 29. Besides ath-
letic contests, there will be a
dance at the Ford Auditorium,
a talent contest, sabbath serv-
ices, luncheons and oratorical
and story-telling competitions.
Climaxing the week-end is a
banquet at Holiday Manor.
Over-all chairmen for the con-
vention are Jerry Maxmen of
Brandeis AZA and Pat Reiter
of Glazer BBG.
For the second time in the
six-year-old Goodfellow rivalry,
Redford topped Mumford in the
annual Goodfellow Drive. Red-
ford now takes possession of
the "Little Blue Jug" which
symbolizes the victory. A com-
bined total of $750 was raised.
The Mercury staff will now host
the Redford Outpost staff at a
party.
Mumford tankers placed fifth
in the All-City Swimming Finals
held Dec. 11 at Patton Pool.
Barry Shapiro broke his own
city record with a 1:07.9
timing in the 100-yard breast
stroke. In the 150-yard indi-
vidual medley, Barry again was
first in a photo finish.
Others in the meet were Ira
May, 100-yard breast stroke;
John Holmes, free style; and
the free style relay team of
John Holmes, Jerry Nosan-
chuck, Jerry Sanders and Wally
Stewart.

Dr. Isaac E. Barzilay, La Med
professor of Jewish Studies in
the Semitic Languages and Lit-
erature department at Wayne
State University, will be guest
speaker of Farband Arlazaroff
Branch, on Jan. 7, at the Hayim
Greenberg Center. He will de-
liver the first of three lectures
on the "Uniqueness of Jewish
History."
Arlazaroff Branch is also
planning . a 25th anniversary
celebration on Feb. 8. Farband
national president Meyer Brown
will attend the function. A cul-
ture center will be erected by
Histadrut in Israel, in honor of
the Branch. Heading the com-
mittee on arrangements are Mor-
ris Schaver, Harry Schumer and
Isadore Brown.

the Detroit Police Department's
Youth Award. Certificates will
be presented at the Senior
Honors Convocation. Their
names will be added to a plaque
in the school library. The se-
lection was based on the stu-
dent's character, loyalty, leader-
ship, participation in school ac-
tivities, reliability and scholar-
ship.
Camp Tamarack is the scene
of the Michigan State Temple
Youth's study retreat this week-
end. Representatives from all
over Michigan plan to study
modern phases of Judaism.
Rabbi Hillel A. Fine, of Harris-
burg, Pa., will speak on "Mai-
monides' 13 Principles of
Faith." Chairman of the retreat
is Mumfordite Bob Aptekar.
