JERUSALEM — The govern-
ment of Israel Wednesday
tightened restrictions against
press coverage of its activities
by ordering all civil servants to
withhold not only secret data
but also any information com-
ing to their knowledge "which
is not expressedly intended for
publication purposes."
The order was issued by the
civil service commission in a
circular to all government em-
ployes, warning them that .un-
der the 1957 amendments to
the state security law any gov-
ernment employee who "with-
out legal authority passes on
information coming to his at-
tention in his official capacity
to a person not authorized to
receive such information is
liable to three years imprison-
ment."
The circular stressed that
"it must be emphasized that a
journalist has no more right
to receive information than the
general public."
It was disclosed that em-
ployes in all government of-
fices were required to sign
declarations pledging them-
selVes to keep all information
secret.
Khrushchev Queried
by Sen. Humphrey on
USSR Anti-Semitism
WASHINGTON, (JTA) —
Sen. Hubert Humphrey of
Minnesota raised the question
of anti-Semitism in the Soviet
Union during his recent eight-
hour talk with Soviet Premier
Nikita S. Khrushchev and the
Premier denied its existence,
David Lawrence, publisher of
the magazine U.S. News and
World Report, reported in his
nationally syndicated news-
paper column Monday.
Lawrence quoted a recorded
transcript of a telephone con-
versation with Sen. Humphrey
in London in which the Sen-
ator made the disclosure to
him. Lawrence said he had
asked Sen. Humphrey if he
had raised the religious ques-
tion during the Khrushchev in-
terview and Sen. Humphrey
replied:
"I asked about anti-Semitism,
for example, in the Soviet
Union and about the whole
question of religious freedom
there. Khruschev denied the
existence of anti-Semitism and
said there was a degree of re-
ligious freedom — in other
words that people could go
to their churches. Of course
I pointed out that there were
very few of them to go to. He
was not responsive, I might
say, in this."
