T h e Southeastern Michigan
Division of the American Can-
cer Society launched an inten-
sified campaign against uterine
cancer at its 13th annual ban-
quet Wednesday night.
Cancer of the cervix is 100%
curable if detected early
enough, said Dr. Joseph Meigs,
guest speaker for the evening.
Dr. Meigs, consulting gynecolo-
gist at Boston's Vincent Me-
morial Hospital, mentions some
interesting facts about the in-
cidence of cancer of the cervix
among Jewish women.
He noted that at the chief
cancer detection . hospital lo-
cated in heavily-Jewish New
York City, only 5% of cervix
cancer patients are Jewish. He
postulated that circumcision of
Jewish males may in part ex-
plain the low incidence and he
also suggested that hygiene
practices among Jewish women
may also explain the difference.
Dr. Meigs is featured as nar-
rator and physician in a new
film available from the Ameri-
can Cancer Society, "Time and
Two Women," which deals with
detection a n d treatment of
uteran cancers. The color film
is obtainable for women's
groups. Dr. Meigs also urged the
indoctrination of family phy-
sicians in the tests for detection
of uterine cancer and pleaded
for regular examinations for
women. "We are trying to save
your lives," he told the audi-
ence.
Dr. Howard P. Doub was
elect e d _president of the re-
gional Cancer Society.
