Istanbul Jews Appeal
Order Disbanding Its
Charitable Agencies
ISTANBUL (JTA) — The
Istanbul Jewish community
awaits a reply from Gov.
Ethem Yekiner to an appeal
against an order dissolving a
coordinating committee for a
dolen Jewish charitable and
social agencies.
A delegation of religious and
lay -Jewish leaders called on
the Governor to explain that
centralization of charitable and
social activities, under the
over all supervision of the
Grand Rabbinate, facilitated
both fund-raising and adminis-
tration of the various institu-
tions: These include the Jewish
hospital and orphanage and six
Jewish schools.
The order noted that under
Turkish law, the Grand Rab-
binate could supervise only
religious activities and that
social and welfare socities were
permissible if organized in-
dependently of the • Grand Rab-
binate.

Yiddish Theater in Milwaukee
Editor, The Jewish News:
I read with keen interest
your comment on the Yiddish
theater which appeared in your
column "Purely Commentary".
It is regrettable, as you point
out, that the Yiddish theater,
one of the great creative in-
terpreters of Jewish life, is
passing into oblivion in this
country.
How gratifying and refresh-
ing it is, then, to know that
in Milwaukee a competent, en-
thusiastic and very successful
Yiddish theater group, Perhift,
is now in its 38th consecutive
year and is currently directed
by Judah Bleich.
The Perhift Players of Mil-
waukee have, during the course
of their activity, presented the
great classics of the Yiddish
theater.
It was encouraging to see
that in this age of the mori-
bund Yiddish theater a Yiddish
drama in Milwaukee drew hun-
dreds of people to its perfor-
mances.

Cohen, B-G Stories
BY DAVID SCHWARTZ
• Ben Cohen is known as the
former assistant of Dag Ham-
marskjold at the United Nations
and now as Ambassador of
Chile to the United States. Also
he is a good Jew. When he
first entered diplomatic life, it
was suggested that he drop the
name of Cohen as too Jewish.
"If you want to take me, you
have also to take my name,"
responded Ben Cohen, and he
has remained a proud Cohen.
PARIS (JTA)—Andre Blu-
mel, president of the Zionist
Federation of France, urged the
French government to take
action to prevent the recur-
rence of anti-Jewish incidents
in Algeria. In an article in
the current issue of the Zion-
ist Tribune, the veteran Jew-
ish leader cites a number of
recent anti-Jewish incidents of
violence.
M. Blumel recalls that some
of France's most notorious
anti-Semites were natives of
Algeria. His appeal was picked
up and reported by Le Monde,
France's leading daily, which
described it as a "sincere ap-
peal which should not be for-
gotten."
Dr. James G. McDonald tells
this one. As Israel's philhar-
monic was playing one of the
long hair avant garde composi-
tions, Mrs. Ben-Gurion nudged
her husband. "See, over there,
Ben-Zvi is sleeping!"
"For that you have to wake
me," replied Ben-Gurion.
"I suppose all pianists good
enough to play in public have
about the same competence,
and that is usually 95 per cent
of the job. The crucial five per
cent that sets you apart is per-
sonality."—Vladimir Horowitz.

Torchlight Parades Mark
Israel Hanukah Festivities
JERUSALEM (JTA)—Torch-
light parades in cities, towns
and villages across Israel usher-
ed in the Chanukah festival.
Children in school and scout
formations marched, sang and
danced as Israel welcomed the
festival of lights.
In this city, Mayor Gershon
Agron presided over an impres-
sive public ceremony attended
by thousands of Jerusalemites
and visitors. On Mt. Scopus, in-
side the Jordan lines, the guard
units on the Hebrew University
campus and Hadassah Hospital
grounds, a giant candelabra was
lighted, spreading its light over
no-man's land between Israel
and its Arab neighbor.
