Deportation Orders
Quashed in Canada

TORONTO. (JTA)—Deporta-
tion orders against three immi-
grants from Israel were quashed
by Justice R. I. Ferguson of the
Ontario Supreme Court. The
judge condemned the govern-
ment's investigation of these
cases as having a "Gilbertian
flavor" and having been a
"farce."
The defendants in all three
cases had entered Canada as
students and had applied for
permanent immigration status
after having entered on a tem-
porary basis.
Justice Ferguson ruled that
"once on our soil, he (the immi-
grant) is entitled to the protec-
tion of our laws. He is then en-
titled to invoke any provision
of the Immigration Act in his
favor."
He characterized as "a farce"
the procedure of ordering the
immigrant deported "because he
did not have that which he was
applying so earnestly to get
from the persons empowered to
give it to him."

PARIS (JTA)—The Algerian
Jewish Committee for Social
Studies, leading central organi-
zation of the Jewish commu-
nity in Algiers, has notified
Algerian authorities of anti-
Jewish outbreaks and threats
of anti-Semitism, and has re-
quested government action to
suppress such outbreaks.
The latest issue of Informa-
tion Juive—only Jewish news-
paper currently published in
North Africa — which was re-
ceived here recently, indicates
that French paratroopers and
Moslems have joined in anti-
Semitic actions in Algiers in
recent months. The newspaper
reports that, in one instance,
French paratroopers threatened
Jews in Constantine when a
Moslem there had accused a
Jew of "insulting" General
Charles de Gaulle and France.
The paratroopers, in retaliation,
forced Jewish women into the
streets, and made them wash
the streets.
The Information Juive reports
also other cases of Jews being
insulted and of Jews coming to
blows with French troops. One
French officer is said to have
said openly that if Pierre
Mendes-France should ever
come to power in France,
"Arabs of Algeria would be-
come slaves of the Jews."

Jewish Congress director for
Latin America, tendered a re-
ception to Dr. Kubovi, who was
five years in the post here.
-Leaders of all major Jewish
