An Irishman Is News If
His Name Is Luke Leonard

By FRANK SIMONS
Because of the very nature
of The Jewish News, only a few
Irishmen have captured head-
lines in our weekly columns.
Notable exceptions have been
Robert Briscoe, first Jewish
Lord Mayor of Dublin, and Isaac
Halevy Herzog, who, before be-
coming Chief Rabbi of Israel
was Chief Rabbi of Ireland.
All of which brings us to an-
other Irishman—this gentleman
an Irish Catholic named Luke
Leonard who was on the re-
ceiving end of a testimonial
dinner on Tuesday evening, at
the Detroit Leland Hotel.
The event is notable in the
local communty because of the
work Leonard has done through
the years for inter-group and
inter-faith relations in the city
of Detroit and the state of
Michigan.
It was significant enough to
bring David A. Brown, that
venerable ex-Detroiter who is
almost a legend in fund-rais-
ing circles here, all the way
from California where he now
lives to pay tribute to his
friend of 41 years.
There were many other nota-
bles in attendance, including
George W. Stark, former col-
umnist for The Detroit News,
who now devotes most of his
time to the Detroit Historical
Society and his duties as his-
toriographer for the City of
Detroit.
Others were Aaron Droock,
the evening's toastmaster, and
Havelock Northmore, an attor-
ney, both of whom have been
long-time friends of Leonard
and associates in many diver-
sified movements; and Gene
Goldkette, Detroit's most popu-
lar band leader of a few years
back.
But the evening was stimu-

lating mostly because of the
nostalgic dialogue between two
men—a Jew and an Irish Cath-
olic—whose warm affection for
each other at times brought
mist to their eyes and to those
of many who attended the
dinner.
While the careers of David
A. Brown and Luke Leonard
have been divergent, there have
been many meeting places in
time where their paths have
crossed, and, as they both re-
lated, they have kept in con-
stant contact no matter how far
distant they have been.
It was Brown who wove the
tale of their meeting—of a
persistent Irishman who came
to his office in 1917 to find
the formula for a successful
fund-raising campaign for the
Knights of Columbus in Grand
Rapids.
At the time, Brown was en-
gaged in the first city-wide
fund-raising campaign in De-
troit to raise $7,500,000 (he
raised $10,500,000), but he
agreed to go with Leonard to
Grand Rapids.
Here, he outlined the drive
for $50,000, and Leonard carry-
ing on from there in the Brown
tradition, went way over the top,
collecting $150,000.
The two worked together also
in the Red Cross Campaign, the
Child Saving Campaign and the
Irish Relief Campaign of 1919,
Brown relates, but the biggest
effort was for the national
United War Work Compaign
for $235,000,000.
With Brown as chairman and
Leonard as his field general
working in 81 Michigan coun-
ties, the drive in Michigan not
only surpassed its goal, but
succeeded in raising the highest
total amount in the nation.
The scene then changed to
only eight years ago and a
breakfast given by Leonard and
the Irish Fellowship for one
David A. Brown, who, on the
occasion of his 75th birthday,
was being honored for his aid
to the Irish and to the Catholic
church.
"Of all the honors—and there
have been many—that I have
received, I cherish above all the
rest that breakfast gathering,"
Brown said.
And in future years, if you
should ask Luke Leonard
about the high points in his
life, he will almost certainly
answer that one was a testi-
monial dinner, at which his
friend Dave Brown gave so
moving a tribute to their days
of companionship.
Leonard will be leaving De-
troit around the first of the year
to assume the position of na-
tional executive director of
Americans All, a newly-formed
organization to combat Com-
munism and other forms of
tyranny.
For the past 18 years, he has
combined his work in public re-
lations with an abiding interest
in Alcoholics Anonymous. Tues-
day's dinner, while a testimonial
for Leonard, had the double
purpose of providing a home
here to assist in rehabilitating
alcoholics.
