Israel, or concerns herself with
the restoration of sight to a
partially blind Moroccan child;
whether she participates in a
forum on the problems of the
Middle East or leads a neighbor-
hood Bible study g r o u p, or
supports individual develop-
ment of Israel by selling bonds,
she exhibits a twin awareness
of J e wish consciousness and
social responsibility.
It is this combination which
makes the Hadassah woman a
true phenomenon of the Amer-
ican scene. Born and bred in
this country, she welds the best
of 20th century inventiveness
with the loyalty to her people
and compassion for all mankind
which spring out of her Jewish
tradition.
Just who is the Hadassah
member? Why does she join?
In grandmother's day, motiva-
tion for embracing Hadassah
rested on the Weltschmerz of
Jewish homelessness. It was a
mitzvah to work for the cause
of Jewish restoration in Pales-
tine.
However, for the next genera-
tion, often called the "lost gen-
eration," emotion was replaced
by logic and reason. The appeal
was based chiefly on the need
to improve medical and sanitary
conditions pr e v ale n t in the
Palestine of the '20's and '30's.
Today, the dream of a home-
land realized, and with knowl-
edge that work for Israel
strengthens American efforts to
spread the democratic ideal, our
young woman, possessing more
leisure than her predecessors
and more freedom to decide
what to do with it, joins to keep
up with the times.
The motivation is not always
on such a high level: the social
pressures of friends, the need
to find companionship and
status in a new community,
often serve to attract the new
member. But frequently becom-
ing engrossed in Hadassah's
program, she remains to do an
effective job.
From which stratum of soci-
ety and age level does this corn
posite modern woman emerge
into Hadassah?
Hadassah's two-fold credo —
support of the State of Israel,
especially in the medical and
social fields, and work on the
American scene, especially in
the sphere of political aware-
ness, is adopted by the active

workers of all age levels and
from all economic groupings.
In 15,000 groups and chapters
within 28 geographic regions
they pay dues, attend meetings,
listen to speeches, knock on
neighbors' doors, bake cakes
for county fairs, raise $9,000,-
000. annually, make radio and
television appearances, write
skits, edit bulletins, plan pro-
grams, paint posters, discuss
Peretz.
And so, the question, who is
she? can be answered with: She
is an alert daughter of the 20th
century, she is a conscientious
Jewess — and she is a soldier.
The Hadassah husband looks
upon his wife with respectful
puzzlement. How did the house-
wife become so knowledgeable
in international affairs; so able
a defender of civil rights, so
expert in public relations, so
articulate a spokesman for her
people?
He examines the tightly-
controlled chapter treasury
books which his spouse keeps
and wonders whether this is the
same person who manages the
domestic finances.
He wonders only a little
while. After he has watched his
Hadassah wife function on sev-
eral levels, he bows to the
inxeplicable and ineffable.
