"Once Upon a Lifetime" by Dr. Sylvan D. Schwartzman, pro- fessor of Jewish religious edu- cation at Hebrew Union College- Jewish Institute of Religion, published by the Union of American He- brew Congre- gations, offers a birdseye view of young Jewry's reli- gious activ- ities. Actually, it is a resume of a youth's lifetime. Schwartzman It begins with a voyage—the arrival of the Jew for a trip and then the tour itself. And then come the Bar Mitzcah for boys, with the blessing in He- brew and in English, activities in the religious school, religious services in the Temple, the mar- riage and other ceremonies and all the events in which Jews play roles as Jews in a lifetime. Rabbi Schwartzman states that "the essential concern of this volume is to widen the LIPKIN and OLEFSKY in CONCERT Wed., Dec. 17 at 8:30 p.m. Scottish Rite Masonic Temple Tickets at Grinnell's Downtown, Center Music Shop at Northland and Eastland Tickets $3.30, 2.75, 2.20, 1.65 MASONIC AUDITORIUM child's experience with his own religious practices." For the Reform Jewish youth, this is an excellent guide through reli- gious life and experiences. The Hebrew phrases and prayers serve as introductions to valuable basic tenets in Jew- ish experiences. Such declara- tions (from the Ethics of the Fathers) as al tifrosh min hatzi- bur, "you should not separate yourself from the community, serve to inspire interest in Jew- ish life generally. The illustrations by Maurice Rawson add to the book's value. They assist in explaining the practices evaluated in this work. German Non-Jew Leaves 125,000 Pounds for Israel JERUSALEM (JTA)—A Ger- man non-Jewish woman residing in Munich has left a legacy of 125,000 pounds to the State of Israel with specific instructions that none of the property should "fall into Aryan hands." The Ministry of Justice, dis- closing the bequest, said that the donor had explained that her properties had been con- fiscated by the Nazis and there- fore she was determined that her property should not fall into German hands again. The prop- erty includes extensive farm holdings in West Germany. The Ministry reported that legacies to the State of Israel from abroad during the past year totalled more than 1,000,- 000 Israeli pounds.
