Local JNF Conference Endorses $500,000
Project in Israel's Independence Forest

Giving unanimous approval to
the planting of 2,000,000 trees
in the Independence Forest in
Israel, the annual conference of
the Jewish National Fund Coun-
cil of Detroit last Sunday offi-
cially resolved to plant 250,000
of the trees as Detroit's quota
in the Forest.
Delegates decided that the
$500,000 project could be com-
pleted within two to three years,
and to that end resolved that:
1. The 40th anniversary of the
JNF Council in Detroit be the
occasion for a city-wide pro-
gram in May;
2. January, being JNF Month,
all constituent groups mobilize
their efforts during that month;
3. The establishment of a
Michigan Council and local com-
mittees in various cities and
towns throughout the state
would enable JNF to better
meet current obligations;
4. A Blue Box be placed in
every Jewish home.
From every element -repre-
sented at the conference—there
were nearly 200 delegates from
85 communal organizations —
came pledges of assistance in
obtaining the funds necessary
for the JNF's new Independence
Forest, which will be located
at Adullam, southeast of Jeru-
salem.
Harry Kaminer, spokesman
for the landsmanshaften, pledg-
ed that in addition to its cur-
rent project to plant 30,000
trees, which he said is now half-
completed, a Detroit Landsman-
shaften Forest of 18,000 will be
undertaken in the Independence
Forest.
Youth from six organizations
—Hashomer Hatzair, Habonim,
Bnai Brith Youth Organization,
Adas Shalom Youth, Leaders
Training Fellowship and the
Zionist S t u d e n t Council of
Wayne State University — an-
nounced plans to call the first
JNF youth conference on Jan.
25 to stimulate educational
projects.
Religious organizations, which
already have completed the
Temchin, Stollman, Nusbaum
and Schlussel Forests, pledged
an increase in efforts mainly
through Tu b'Shvat appeals,
while the JNF Foundation proj-
ect for wills, foundations and
b e q u e s t s announced steady
progress.
Philip Slomovitz, founder of
the JNF Council, sounded the
keynote of the meeting at the
morning session when he urged
the conference to double its out-
put of 50,000 trees planted each
year.
He cautioned, however, that
in order to get the job done it
was necessary to activate our
young people. The Jewish News'
editor and publisher referred
to recent addresses by Dr. Na-
hum Goldmann as sounding a
new warning to Jewish leaders
to educate their children.
"I am not that pessimistic on
the survival of Jewry," Slomo-
vitz said, "we're s tub b or n
enough to survive. But we must
re-educate our children. Jewish
youth must know the answer to
libels against Jews. The prob-
lem of the young Jew is to be
able to hold high the banner of
a great Jewish heritage. He
must be given a place in Jewish
life."
State Sen. Israel Stiefel, of
Philadelphia, Pa., in the major
address of the afternoon's plen-
ary session, emphasized t h e
need of Israel to reconquer the
wilderness through afforesta-
tion, and called on Jews and
non-Jews alike "to support this
purely American project.
Sen. Stiefel said that tree
planting had a decided appeal
to American non-Jews because
1. Americans are romantic and
there is much romance in the

story of trees; 2. They can be
always appealed to on the basis
of the soil; 3. The Bible is en-
grained in the heart of America;
and 4. There • is a similarity of
the frontier of Israel and that
of the Old West.
Paul Yaakov Jacoby, Vice-
Mayor of Jerusalem, another
principal conference speaker,
cited t h e recently - approved
Land Authority in Israel, which
has the cooperation of the Is-
rael government and JNF.
He said that the new program
will intensify afforestation and
reclamation efforts and also
serve to harness the waters,
provide hydro - electric power
and send irrigation projects
throughout the country.
Mrs. Max Stollman, president
of the JNF Auxiliary, the only
women's group of its kind in
the country, reported that Mrs.
Mrs. Sidney Ravin, a past Aux-
iliary president, will go to
Washington next week to form
the basis of an auxiliary there
and in other areas of the nation.
She said that the group would
undertake to , plant 100,000 of
the trees in the new Israel
forest, the first step in the pro-
gram being the annual donor
event on Jan. 27, at Temple
Israel, at which columnist Drew
Pearson will be guest speaker.
The annual report of the di
rector, Percy Kaplan, indicated
that, the recession notwithstand-
ing, JNF locally showed a gain
of $7,000 over the previous
year. Total tree sales totaled
$165,120.
Avern L. Cohn was chairman
of the conference, and presided
at the morning session, while
Dr. Samuel M. Levin, president
of the JNF Council, presided at
the afternoon program.
Other conference participants
were Rabbi Emanuel Apple-
baum, Rabbi Joshua Sperka,
Arie Shoval, of the JNF youth
and education department; Mrs.
Max Frank, vice-chairman of
the Zionist Council; and Charles
Goldstein, a vice-president of
the Jewish Community Council;
and William Hordes, a past
president of the JNF Council.
A musical interlude was pre-
sented during the aftern6on
session by Cantor Louis Klein,
of Cong. Bnai Moshe, who was
accompanied at the piano by
Rebecca Frohman.
Another feature of the con-
ference was the presentation of

tions, said that if Ham-

Article Eight, this meant that

the question an urgent one.
