THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS—Fr i day, December 5, 1958-22 Urge Social Work by Draft-Exempt Women JERUSALEM, (JTA) — The left-wing parties in the Ben- Gurion coalition Government: have renewed their clamor for social service in immigrant settlements for young women exempted from military ser- vice on religious grounds, it was learned here. No decision has yet been taken by the Cab- inet. The social service as an al- ternative for military duty was proposed two years ago, but the objections of the National Religious Party, then a mem- ber of the coalition, prevented any action. However, with the religious bloc out of the gov- ernment, it would appear that there is a better chance for the measure to gain accept- ance. Prof. Max Apt, a lawyer and economist who was forced to leave Germany under the Nazi regime and returned to the country in 1954, filed a claim for damages he incurred as a result of Nazi policies — the fact that as a result of the burning of his books by the Nazis and his forced emigra- tion from the country, his name had been obliterated from the public consciousness. Prof. Apt's claim ultimately reached the high court which ruled that "physical, intellec- tual and occupational attrib- utes of an individual are a part of his personality, insep- arable from their bearer." . BERLIN, (JTA) — A play dealing with -the story of the Jews in the Warsaw Ghetto, `en by Thomas Harlan, son of the Nazi-honored film direc- tor Veit Harlan, opened here to critical and audience praise. The play entitled "I, Myself, and No Angel." Harlan has pub- licly repudiated his father's role in directing the anti-Semitic "Jud Suess," which was ex- ploited by the Nazis, and has set himself the task of making amends for the sufferings of the Jews. Meanwhile, it was established that the most successful Amer- ican play ever to play in post- war West Germany is "Diary of Anne Frank," now in its third season. It has been per- formed by 102 theatres in West Germany, East Germany, Aus- tria and Switzerland, all Ger- man-speaking lands. The Foreign Minister is current- ly visiting West Germany. The former Nazi official, Dr. Max Merten, was arrested 18 months ago while vacationing in Greece. A Berlin attorney after the war, Merten was an administrative official in war- time Salonika. He was charged with having helped deport Greek Jews to their death, re- sponsibility for the murder of Greek hostages and the sale of counterfeit notes to Jews in ex- change for gold currency.
