PARIS — A number of well
known anti-Semites and the
entire Poujadist party which
distinguished itself in anti-
Semitism h a v e disappeared
from the French parliamentary
scene in the election campaign
which ended this weekend.
French Jewish organizations
feel that the new Chamber of
Deputies will be the friendliest
toward Jews in many years.
They note that the 52-deputy
Poujade group won no seats,
while individual anti-Semites,
hiding under other party labels,
like M. Tixier Vignancourt, M.
Isorni, who was M ars h al
Petain's attorney, and M. bides,
former police commissioner,
also met defeat.
11; was pointed out that
though the new powerful union
for the new republic has not
its complete program public,
its leadership and Gen. Charles
de Gaulle, to whom it is
pledged, have made known that
they will fight racism. A num-
ber of small rightist groups
nominally in support of Gen.
de Gaulle suffered severe set-
backs during the campaign
when their attempts to smear
individual Jewish candidates
were rejected by the very can-
didates they endorsed.
The new chamber is also
expected to be pro-Israel with
the exception of the 10 Com-
munist deputies. The leader of
the Union of the New Republic,
Jacques Soustelle, has been
openly pro-Israel for years,
most recently advocating a
direct military pact between
France and Israel. The Social-
ists are led by Guy Mollet,
another friend of Israel and
Premier of France during the
Sinai-Suez c amp a i g n. Many
centrist leaders also are pro-
Israel.
Five Jews were elected to
the Chamber of Deputies in
the final round in the French
national elections, an official
count revealed.
Four of the Jews, Rene
Moatti, M. Dreyfus-Dui, Mar-
cel Dassault and M. Bukanov-
sky, are members of Jacques
Soustelle's Union for the New
Republic, the largest party in
the new Parliament. One Jew,
M. Ginsburg, is a Communist.
A number of. Jews who were
eliminated were nationally
known figures, including Jules
Moch, a member of several
postwar Cabinets.

Canada Refuses to Ease
Its Immigration Laws
for Influx of Refugees

MONTREAL, (JTA) — Mrs.
Ellen L. Fairclough, Minister
of Citizenship and Immigra-
tion, has turned down requests
for broader consideration of
applications for the admission
to Canada of Jewish refugees
from Egypt and Hungary and
emigrants from Poland, Iraq
and Lebanon, the Canadian
Jewish Congress revealed. The
requests for liberalized treat-
ment were made by the CJC
and the Jewish Immigrant Aid
Society in a joint memoran-
dum to the Ministry.
Mrs. Fairclough's reply noted
that Canada lacked facilities
for. complete examinations in
the countries from which the
immigrants would be coming.
As a result, certain classes of
relatives of Canadian residents
and citizens cannot be handled
at the present time, she noted,
nor is it possible to deal with
applications of unsponsored im-
migrants from these countries.
The Minister said at the same
time that Canada's immigration
code was in the process of re-
view and she promised to keep
the CJC-JIAS memorandum in
mind.
