The Supreme Religious Coun- cil also added that the poll of experts asked by the minis- terial committee for their views on the issues in the disputed regtdations included seine who were not scholars in Jewish religious law and that this was "a deliberate negation of Torah." Earlier, Chief Rabbi Isaac Herzog joined Rabbi Judah L. Maimon in urging Rabbi Tole- dano to withdraw his ac- ceptance of the Cabinet post. In a letter to the new Minister of Religion, Rabbi Herzog had written that he could not give his blessings on the appoint- ment, which he characterized as "not for the good of reli- gion." Meanwhile, regulations con- cerning the registration of Is- raeli citizens and residents have been cancelled temporarily pending conclusion of the in- ternational survey, Ben-Gurion announced. As a result, Ben-Gurion said, the government will not accept applications for reconsideration of registration classification made earlier in the case of chil- dren of mixed marriages. Protests Aroused by Schools' Ban on Hanukah Discussion NEW HYDE PARK,. N. Y. (JTA)—Jewish leaders of this suburban community protested a New Hyde Park Board of Education ban against discus- sion of Hanukah in local public schools if such discussion inter- ferred with the Christmas sea- son. . The board policy statement declared that "while the Feast of Hanukah is a religious and historical fact, it has no super- sedence over countless other religious and historical events and • should not be celebrated during the Christmas season in the public schools." This did not mean, the statement added, that Hanukah "should not be discussed in the classrooms at a time when it would not inter- fere with the Christmas sea- son." The statement was denounced by Rabbi Andrew Robins, spir- itual leader of the 700-family Temple Emanu-El here, as a "brazen and disgraceful insult to our religion." The Reform rabbi, who is on record as op- posed to the celebration of Han- ukah in the public schools, de- clared it was "outrageous" to speak of Hanukah "in this tone." George Mintzer, president of the New Hyde Park Jewish Com- munity Council, assailed the policy statement was "unten- able," asserting that he ques- tioned "not only its moral prin- ciple, but also its legality." Dr. Frank Picciano, president of the School Board, said that "no ban has been placed on discussions" of Hanukah in the school system. He added that the supervising principal of the school district would have the discretion of deciding when Hanukah could be discussed during the Christmas season. He also said that spiritual leaders and school board members would meet early next year to set policies on holidays. JERUSALEM — Rabbi Jacob M- Toledano, former Chief Rabbi of Tel Aviv, was sworn in Wednesday as Israel's new Minister for Religious Affairs after a three-day debate in the Knesset marked by two de- feated motions of non-con- fidence in Premier Ben-Gurion's coalition government. The confirming vote was 60 to 2 with 38 abstentions. The two opposition votes were cast by the Communist party. Abstaining were four parties, including the National Religious party which had vigorously sought to persuade Rabbi Tole- dano against accepting the post left open by the resignation last summer of Moshe Shapiro. Shapiro r e s i g n e d, as did Minister of Posts Joseph Burg, in the dispute over the issues of self identification by Israeli citizens as Jews for registry purposes. The other abstaining parties were Herut, General Zionists and the ultra-orthodox Agudas Israel. - Rabbi Toledano, whose ac- ceptance of the post brought him a flood of protests and pressure from' orthodox circles in Israel and abroad, pledged that he would quit the cabinet if and when it takes any decisions "contrary to Jewish Herut Parley Rejects religious law." `Policy of Appeasement' Meanwhile, the office of Pre- TEL AVIV (JTA)—The fifth mier Ben-Gurion released a list national convention of the Herut of 15 Israeli rabbis and per- Party of Israel concluded here sonalities and 30 rabbis and with the adoption of resolutions Jewish figures abroad who opposing a policy of appease- have been asked by a cabinet ment by the government of committee studying the ques- Israel, demanding the conclu- tion for their opinion on how sion of bilateral agreements with to register a child of mixed the Western Powers rather than parentage whose mother re- seeking guarantees, and a reduc- fuses to accept conversion to tion and even elimination—if Judaism though she and the possible—of military adminis- father . request that the child tration in the Arab border areas be considered Jewish. of Israel. • ' Among the Americans are The delegates also voiced their Associate Justice Felix Frank- opposition to the Soviet plan to furter, of the U.S. Supreme "exile Russian Jewry to Bii.obid- Court; Rabbi Abba Hillel Silver, jan." Russia Only Holdout in Planned Increases of Trading with Israel LONDON, (JTA) — Eastern European countries, with the exception of the Soviet Union, are planning to increase their purchases of Israeli citrus fruit, Barclay's Bank "Overseas Re- view" reported. The authoritative trade jour- nal said that Poland is be- lieved to have placed orders for 104,000 cases of Israeli oranges. Yugoslavia has order- ed 40,000 cases of fruit and Romania 10,000, while negoti- ations continue between Is- raeli growers and Hungary and Bulgaria. The USSR, which unilaterally broke an oil-f or- citrus agreement two years ago, is not expected to buy Israeli fruit. Exports from Israel to the Communist countries of Europe, the review said, total- led $8,600,000 in the first seven months of 1958. Trade with the United States will also increase, the review stated. A first shipment of asbestos cement pressure pipe will soon be shipped to the U.S., the first time this prod- uct has found a market-in the U.S. Cement products will be shipped shortly to Hong Kong and Burma, it was reported. A major increase is expected in Israel-German commerce, ac- cording to the publication. Negotiations are under way for the sale of 100,000,000 Israeli eggs to West Germany, while some industrial products are expected to be shipped by the Israelis to Germany. At the same time, Israeli film im- porters, anticipating a lifting of the anti-German film ban, have already made down pay- ments on German - produced movies.
