JERUSALEM, (JTA) — "Dr.
Zhivago," the novel which
earned for the Russian poet
Boris Pasternak the Nobel
Prize for literature as well as
denunciation by the Communist
hierarchy, was issued here in
a Hebrew translation. Issued in
a paperback edition, and popu-
larly priced, the book was put
out by the Federation of Labor's
publishing house, "Am Oved,"
of which Moshe Sharett, former
Prime Minister and ex-Foreign
Minister, is now the editor-in-
chief. The Hebrew version was
translated from the original
Russian.

Sanctioning Arab Bias

NEW YORK (JTA) — The
American Jewish Congress will
appeal a decision by the New
York State Commission Against
Discrimination which, in effect,
granted sanction to the policy
of the Arabian American Oil
Company of screening out
Jews for employment in Saudi
Arabia and New York.
In a statement. by Shad
Polier, chairman of the Con-
gress' Commission on Law and
Social Action, the organization
hit out at statements by the
State Department to SCAD that
United States interests would
be adversely affected if New
York • State's law barring bias
in employment were applied in
this case. He expressed the
belief that the Federal and
state governments "have the
obligation to see to it that the
bigoted practices of other na-
tions are not allowed to breed
discrimination within our own
borders."

ance was the widow of the late

Meanwhile, in Paris, the Com-
munist-run "World Peace Move-
men" announced that, as part of
its international cultural pro-
gram, it will celebrate next
year the hundredth anniversary
of the birth of Sholem Alei-
chem. Moscow has already fixed
the policy on this point for all
Communist organizations by
announcing several months ago
that it would publish an edition
of Sholom Aleichem's collected
works in 1959. However, the
publication in the USSR will be
in Russian—not in Yiddish.
