In "Ancient Semitic Civiliza-
tions," published by Putnam
(210 Madison, N.Y. 17), Saba-
tino Moscati,professor of
Semitic philology at the Uni-
versity of Rome, throws a great
deal of light on the history of
the Semitic peoples, including
the Hebrew.
Many valuable facts are in-
corporated in this most read-
able book, and the 35 illustra-
tions and maps add to the
value of the study.
Dr: Moscati makes a most
interesting comment, about an
accepted fact regarding the
religious contribution of the
Semites: that "the Semitic con-
tribution is specifically that of
one member of the group: the
Hebrews."
The value of his explanation
lies in the simplicity with
which he develops his point
about "the essential kernel of
Hebrew religion, as it was
transmitted to the European

world by Christianity, and to
Asia and Africa by Islam."
"Ancient Semitic Civiliza-
tions" gains in value as the
author pursues the task of
describing the development of
the several peoples in the
Mediterranean area. He de-
scribes "the historical heritage
of the best-known of its
peoples, the Hebrews," and
there is a touch of the drama-
tic in his analysis of "the
players" among the Semites.
He . explains the derivation
of the name Semite, from a
passage in Genesis referring to
the sons of Shem, descended
from Noah.
Hebrew links with other
peoples, and with the sister
religions, the Hebrews' difficul-
ties with Mohammed and the
Arabs, the course of Hebrew
history, the leadership of
Moses, the conquest of Pales-
tine, the development of
Hebrew nationalism and the

Hebrew culture, the eventual
dispersion from Judaea, Pro-
phecy and the Prophets and
scores of other historical facts
are included in the review of
the history of the Hebrews.
Similarly, the author skil-
fully evaluates the Babylonians
and the Assyrians, Canaanites,
Aramaeans and Ethiopians.
In view of modern develop-
ments in and around Israel,
the analysis of Mohammedan-
ism and the review of Arab
historical incidents has special
value for the reader.
This is a noteworthy book.
It takes into consideration
modern archaeological findings,
including those of Dr. Nelson
Glueck, and in its objectivity
it serves a valuable purpose.
