made for the annual concert
to raise funds for destitute can-
tors locally, in Europe and
Israel. Cantor Fenakel is chair-
man of the concert, to be held
at Adas Shalom Synagogue dur-
ing Jewish Music Month.

Beth Yehudah Schools to par-,
take of a sumptuous meal and
to be entertained by opera sing-

Joey Adams.
But the star of the evening,
taking nothing away from either
entertainer, was 16 - year - old
Deborah Isbee, a student at the
Schools, who reminded the folks
why they had come.
Deborah, a student at the Ye-
shivah since nursery school and
now a twelfth grader, referred
to those who paid $50 a plate
to attend the dinner program as
"ambassadors of the Almighty."
She suggested that as con-
tributors to the growth of the
Beth Yehudah Schools, which
now has a student enrollment
of nearly 1,000 all-day and after-
noon students, the audience had
made an investment not only in
the future of the Schools, but
in the growth of Torah Judaism.
In speaking ,for her class-
mates, Deborah pointed out to-
day's "tragic conflict of parents
adding that the education re-
ceived at the Yeshivah bridges
the gap between these two
worlds.
The vivacious young lady re-
cited a long list of universities
and theolog leal institutions

the honored position in which
Beth Yehudah graduates are
held in higher institutions.
"At the Beth Yehudah," she
told her audience, "the highest
importance is placed on scholar-
ship, but even beyond the con-
fines of the classroom Jewish
life is emphasized in daily pray-
ers, holiday programs and ritu-
als and practices.
"There is no blackboard jun-
gle at the Beth Yehudah. We
are taught respect; we learn to
give to our needy brethren; we
are imbued with the ideals of
honesty and fairness. •
"The goal of our education
combines a love for learning
with a nobility of character,
and here we are given the tools
to impart our learning to the
younger children through' teach-
ing and example."
One of the highlights of the
evening was the presentation by
Mayor Louis C. Miriani of the
"Man of the Year" Award, which
was given to Daniel A. Laven, a
long and staunch supporter of
the Schools.
The citation read: "For hiS

A junior congregation for
boys and girls, 8 to 13, is being
organized by Young Israel Cen-
ter of Oak-Woods, it is an-
nounced by Jack Ginsburg, pres-
ident.
The new group, which will
meet at 9:30 a.m., each Sat-
urday, will supplement activi-
ties of an existing group for
boys, 13 to 16, which meets at
9 a.m. to conduct a complete
service of its own.

Detroit Chabad Sets
Celebration Dinner
Detroit office of Chabad Mer-
kos L'Inyonei Chinuch is spon-
soring a dinner at 6:30 p.m.,
Nov. 30, at the Beth Shmuel so-
cial hall, Dexter and Buena
Vista. All proceeds of the din-
ner will go for the Lubavitch
relief and rehabilitation pro-
gram in Israel.
The dinner is being held in
celebration of "Yud Tes Kislev,"
19 days in Kislev, the date upon
which Rabbi Shneur Zalman,
founder of the Chabad move-
ment was freed from Russian
captivity in 1798. Chabad is a
world-wide Hassidic movement,
under the spiritual guidance of
the current Lubavitcher Rebbe,
Rabbi Menachem M. Schneer-
son.
Serving as dinner chairman is
Isadore Stern, with Ernest Cit-
ron, Herbert Eskin, Lazar Ham-
mes and Sam Nelson as co-
chairmen. Rabbi Joshua Sperka,
who has recently returned from
a tour of Israel, will be toast-
master. Many Detroit rabbis are
serving on the dinner commit-
tee, announced Chabad regional
director, Rabbi S h o l o m B.
