THE DETROIT JEWISH NEW S—Fr iday, November 14, 1958-8 Strictly Confidential by PHINEAS J. BIRON Israel and the Scientific Revolution We are giving you an ex- clusive quote from a recent address by Ambassador Abba Eban . . . The speech was delivered at the Weizmann Memorial in Israel on Nov. 2 and this is the only copy of text to have reached this coun- try . . . Said Ambassador Eban who now holds also the title of president of the Weiz- mann Institute: "The future of Israel, in her security, her economic progress and her international prestige, will be profoundly influenced by the scientific revolution of our times . . . I believe that it will be a beneficial influ- ence. The development of nu- clear power and the "perfec- tion — if I may use that word of ballistic missiles have brought about a sharpened sen- sitivity towards the possible eruption of war . . . Leaders of the big powers have the most vital self-interest in pre- venting a conflagration from erupting in any region, not least in our own . . . Wheth- er we welcome such a negative incentive or not, this may rank amongst the factors making, if not for peace, at least for a kind of warlessness . . . In the economic sphere the new forces of nuclear and solar energy open broader vistas of progress than we should have dared to imagine when im- ported oil seemed destined for- ever to be the exclusive source of our energy . . . Moreover, there is a growing tendency for the strength and status of nations to be measured not by breadth of territory or bulk of population, but rather by the quality and brilliance of their intellectual and scientific en- terprise. This new standard of measurement cannot fail to in- crease Israel's weight when the comparative balance of strength and importance is drawn be- tween her and her neighbors . . But for Israel, as the collective expression of the Hebrew faith and tradition, the scientific revolution has a deep philosophic meaning to which no attention has been given in the giddy pace of recent events. Scientific discovery has given majestic vindication to the basic premise of Israel's faith, namely, its undying belief in the unity of nature and the unity of Man . . . Science has revealed that the supreme force of energy is compressed in the one, small and utterly indivisible microscosm . . No concept in the history of ideas can rival the philosophi- cal grandeur of this revelation, except the original doctrine of natural unity upon which the Hebrew faith, and its more powerful tributaries, are found- ed . . . At the same time, science has illuminated the truth of the unity of mankind, whose destiny is now mani- festly one and indivisible for good or for ill . . . By re- vealing these truths, science has sealed a wondrous coven- ant of reconciliation with our ancient faith . . . Gone for- ever are those strange, remote days of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries when reas- on and faith, science and re- ligion, were conceived to be in conflict and antithesis • • • The more a man learns about the structure of nature, the greater becomes his respect for the Architect of the Uni- verse." . . . Eban's eloquent words were distorted and mostly obscured in the newspaper dispatches which reached our press . . . We give this accurate excerpt from his enduring statement so as to make sure that it will be preserved as it was spoken. 1' 1) ~ fl.l,a.fIet)e(1SOS1)SIlS l ac You've deserved this --1 Enjoy the best at the Most Americans Show Sympathy for Israel, Poll Shows WASHINGTON, (JTA) — Americans, almost three-to- one, sympathize with Israel in its conflicts with the Arab states, a Trendex News Poll indicated. When a scientifically-se- lected cross-section of Amer- icans of all faiths was asked whether they sympathize with the Israelis or the Arabs the replies were Israelis, 60.8 percent; Arabs 21.5 percent; indefinite, 17.7 percent. The principal reasons for sympa- thizing with the Israelis were: The Bible said the Jews were to have a home- land there; the Arabs are al- lied with Communism; the Jews are more progressive than the Arabs, and Arabs are largely sympathetic to United Arab Republic Presi- dent Gamal Abdel Nasser, called a threat to peace.
