Couucil Reaffirms Stand Against
Hanukah Observance in Schools
The Jewish Community Coun-
cil has released to the Jewish
community its annual caution
about the impropriety of ob-
servance of Hanukah in the
public schools. In the Council's
view this, as any other religious
holiday, belongs in the home
and in synagogues.
In its communication to
Council affiliated groups, school
personnel and rabbis, the Coun-
cil warned that the celebration
of Hanukah in public schools is
an unwarranted intrusion of re-
ligion in public education, as is
the celebration of a holiday of
any other religion. This posi-
tion of the Council, reaffirming
the tradition of the separation
of Church and State, has been
unanimously endorsed by Coun-
cil delegate assemblies, and
parallels the point of view of
every national Jewish agency.
The Community Council urged
its contituents and the com-
munity to advise the Council
of any situations where Hanu-
kah observances in public
schools seemed likely, or where
some action appeared to be
called for.
William Cohen, the Council's
vice president and chairman of
the community relations com-
mittee, asked that the Council
be consulted before any indi-
vidual activity is undertaken.
