Virginia Paper
Says:
Southern Bigots, Like Nazis, Use Jew as the 'Goat'
RICHMOND, Va• (JTA) —
Virginia's leading daily news-
paper, the Richmond Times-
Dispatch, edit orially com-
mended Gov. J. Lindsay
Almond Jr., for statements
condemning anti-Semitism ex-
pressed in an exclusive inter-
view with the Jewish Tele-
graphic Agency.
"Coupled with Gov. Almond's
previous denunciation of the
Ku Klux Klan, this adds up
to an eminently sane and
proper point of view on the
part of Virginia's Chief Execu-
tive toward professional bomb-
throwers and other sowers of
dissension," said the Times-
Dispatch. "The attitude of Vir-
ginia officialdom toward this
species of obscenity probably
had a good deal to do with
the decision of John Kasper,
the much-jailed hate-monger,
not to resume operations in
this Commonwealth."
The newspaper reviewed at
some length "the dire effects
of professional anti-Semitism,"
tracing developments in Nazi
Germany. "The NaziS had to

Europe

notables, marked the anniversaries of the Balfour Declaration,
the death of Dr. Chaim Weizmann and the death of Mrs. Blanche
Dugdale, Lord Balfour's niece.
VIENNA — Erich Koch, Nazi gauleiter for parts of Poland
and the Ukarine, where he is accused of responsibility for the
murder of hundreds of thousands of Jews under the Nazi
regime, asked the court trying him in Warsaw to call two
members of the International Court of Justice at the Hague
to witness the trial, and he maintained that he not only is
innocent of the charges made against him but should be com-
mended for "all the good' he did for Jews and Poles during
World War II . . . Communists are making use of the synagogue
bombings in the U.S. by charging that anti-Semitic gangs are
rioting and that 'a wave of anti-.Semitic terror" has broken out
in the U.S.
PARIS — A resolution to name a street in Paris "Israel" as
tangible evidence "of the friendly relations between France and
the Jewish State," was introduced in the Paris Municipal Council,
the street suggested in the resolution being a square opposite the
Israel Embassy in the most elegant part of Paris . . . An appeal
to the tenth general conference of 'UNESCO for consideration of
a five-day week in schools with Jewish pupils in both Western
and Eastern Europe, to facilitate Sabbath observance, has been
made by the Agudas Israel World Executive, in a memorandum
submitted by the Agudist delegation to the conference . . . After
two weeks of negotiations, a new trade agreement was signed
between Israel and France for a 10 per cnt increase in volume

BERLIN — The Supreme Restitution Court of Berlin, estab-
lished by the Allied Powers as the final court of appeals on resti-
tution claims in Berlin, received 2,144 cases in its five years of
existence and settled 954 of them, according to a summary of
the court's work. The court also approved settlements in 503
other cases.
STUTTGART, Germany — The officer, Friedrich Wilhelm
Boger, who has been accused as being the "inventor" of some
gruesome modes of torture inflicted on Auschwitz inmates, had
been living under an alias at Hemmingen, but was recognized
last week as the missing "inventor," and has been arrested at
Hemmingen, Wurttemberg.
Annual Parley of JNF, Nov. 30
find a 'goat' to explain their
own failures, and they decided
that the Jews would be the
handiest and most defenseless
victims. The tragic fate of
their innocent victims has been
brought home in recent years
to the German pepole and to
the world by the. brilliant and
unforgettable book and play,
the Diary of Anne Frank."
The Times-Dispatch said, "it
is well, therefore, that here in
Virginia Gov. Almond has
moved forthrightly and vigor-
ously at the outset to slap
down any small minority which
may be seeking to promote
anti-Semitism among us. It is
unthinkable, of course, that
Virginia, or any other Ameri-
can state, could ever be the
scene of such a holocaust as
the Nazis visited upon Ger-
many, but professionally pro-
moted prejudice must never
be allowed to get a foothold
here. We thank the Governor
for his lofty stand and his
unmistakable warning."
