TEL AVIV (JTA) — Shahat
Tan, a Turkish citizen of Saudi
Arabian origin, has been ar-
rested and will be tried on
charges of spying on Egypt,
Israeli police announced.
The 38-year-old former major
in Turkey's army was picked
up after a two-week stay in
Israel, during which he bought
various maps of the country
and took photographs of
various military installations
as well as of Haifa port and
the oil refineries there. Upon
his arrest he immediately told
Israeli police of how he was
contacted by Egyptian intelli-
gence agents and sent into
Israel.
Turkish authorities have been
informed of Shahat Tan's ar-
rest, and a representative of
the Turkish diplomatic mission
here has already visited him
in prison.
It is reported that about 10
persons will shortly be tried
here for espionage in behalf
of various neighboring coun-
tries. Ahmed Ali Osman, an
Egyptian journalist under ar-
rest on charges of espionage,
will be tried for murder for
his part in the killing of two
wardens during the Shatta

trial has been set for De-

mounting in airplanes, Zvi Dar,
head of the government-con-
trolled munitions industry, re-
vealed.
In addition to being com-
pletely self-sufficient as far as
ammunition and lighter arms
is concerned, Dar said, Israel
is also making field mortars
and several types of heavy
armament. He said Israel was
producing its munitions at a
cost of about 15 per cent
lower than the prevailing
world market prices.

NEW IN DETROIT!

JERUSALEM—The task of
the Israel Army at present is
to assist the normalization of
Israel-Arab relations by making
it clear to Arab leaders that a
policy of active hostility to-
ward Israel does not pay, for-
mer Army Chief of Staff
Moshe Dayan said Monday in a
speech at the annual meeting
of Haganah veterans. It was
his first public address since
he resigned from the army last
month.
Maintaining that such nor-
malization was a requisite to

Red China Holds Bodies
as Diplomatic Ransom

JERUSALEM (JTA) — Com-
munist China will not permit
the transfer of the remains of
the late Chief Rabbi of Harbin,
and the Far East, Rabbi Kisi-
lov, until there is a "diplomatic
agreement" between the Pei-
ping Government and Israel.
Israel's Chief Rabbi Isaac Her-
zog was informed today by S.
N. Kenner, head of the Jewish
community at Harbin.
The Communist government
also is holding up the transfer
of the remains of other Jewish
dead from the Harbin ceme-
tery until an official agree-
ment is made between Israel
and Red China. The old Jewish
cemetery at Harbin was re-
cently expropriated by the
Chinese authorities in Man-
churia as a site for a new
housing development, and the
local Jewish community was
given several months to trans-
fer the remains.
