Late Cardinal Mooney Foe of Anti-Semitism

Writing of the late Francis
Cardinal Mooney, of Detroit,
The Michigan Catholic notes
that during the war years Cardi-
nal Mooney not only rallied
American Catholics to the war
efforts against Nazi aggression,
but also prodded "the nation's
conscience."
The newspaper goes on to
note that "in 1944 he spoke out
forthrightly against continuing
evils that were making a mock-

ery of our democratic declara-
tions. In a notable address at a
civic meeting here in Detroit
he assailed anti-Semitism. as
`diametrically opposed to the
virtue of Christian charity'."
Cardinal Mooney was also
among those welcoming Robert
Briscoe, then lord mayor of
Dublin, Ireland, the first Jew to
hold that post, on Briscoe's visit
to Detroit.
