Israel's Citrus Sales Endangered
by European 'Common Market'

JERUSALEM — Israel acted
Wednesday against the threat
to its citrus sales in West Ger-
man and Benelux markets
arising out of progress of a
European six-nation common
market.
The six countries, France,
West Germany, Italy, Belgium,
Netherlands and Luxembourg,
will progressively lower their
tariffs to each other starting
Jan. 1. The final goal is aboli-
tion of customs barriers be-
tween the six countries.
When that goal is reached,
Italian and Algerian citrus
fruits will reach West German
and Benelux markets at much

Nate S. Shapero will be in-
stalled as Jewish co-chairman of
the Detroit Round Table of the
National Conference of Chris-
tians and Jews, at the 30th an-
niversary dinner of the Round
Table, to be held Nov. 20 at
the Masonic Temple.
The principal speaker will be
William T. Gossett, vice preSi-
dent and general counsel of the
Ford Motor Co.

application to the secretariat of
the European common market
asking that steps be taken to
assure that there would be no
customs discrimination against
Israel citrus imports in the six
countries.
Israel also was reported as
negotiating with the Council of
Europe about a possible link
between Israel and the planned
17-member European Economic
Corporation Organization.
Rabbis Support
N. Y. Postal Workers
in No Saturday Work
NEW YORK (JTA) — Con-
servative and Reform rabbis
joined with Orthodox spiritual
leaders in protest against New
York Post Office regulations
which require new postal- em-
ployes to work on Saturdays.
Rabbi Emanuel Rackman,
president of the Orthodox Rab-
binical Council of America,
which launched the fight on
the issue several months ago,
and Rabbi Emanuel Holzer,
met with Postmaster Robert
K. Christenberry, who issued
the order. Both sides declined
to comment on the talks, say-
ing only that further talks
were scheduled.
Particularly affected, accord-
ing to the• rabbinical group,
are postal employes in Man-
hattan and the Bronx, where
13,000 of the 37,000 postal
workers are Jewish. New ap-
pointees have been required
to sign a memorandum agree-
ing to work on Fridays, Satur-
days, Sundays and holidays on
request.
Agudath Israel Sets
Pre-Convention Rally
Agudath Israel of Detroit will
hold a pre-convention rally at
a m'laveh malkeh, at 8:30 p.m.,
Saturday, at the Agudah Cen-
ter, 13322 Dexter. Orthodox
Jewish leaders will be featured
at the rally for the 36th na-
tional convention of Agudah
to be held Nov. 20 to 23, at
Lakewood, N. J.
A question and answer period
will follow the discussion of
Agudah views on religious ques-
tions at the M'lave Malke.
People interested in attend-
ing the national conference at
Lakewood are asked to attend
Saturday's gathering.
Tuesday evening, the seventh
annual Synagogue Adult Insti-
tute will open for registration
and classes at the Beth Aaron
Synagogue, 18000 Wyoming,
with a variety of courses, an-
nounces Rabbi Benjamin H. Gor-
relick, Institute chairman.
The faculty includes Rabbis
Morris Adler, Jacob Chinitz,
Benjamin H. Gorrelick, Moses
Lehrman, and Jacob E. Segal.
The Hebrew teachers are Mrs.
Abraham S. Abraham, Mrs. Har-
old J. Goodman, Alex Roberg
and Samuel Sigal.
Rabbi Jacob E. Segal is pre-
senting a course on "The
Psalms: A Treasury of Faith for
Daily Living."
"The Sabbath Service in the
Synagogue" class is to be con-
ducted by Rabbi Gorrelick.
The historical development,
and similarities and differences
between Judaism and Christi-
anity and Mohammedanism, will
be explored in a special course
offered by Rabbi Morris Adler
'on "The Religions of Jew, Chris-
tian, and Arab."
The Institute is open for reg-
istration to all men and women,
including non-members of Con-
servative synagogues.
Detroiters to Host
Mid-West Conference
of Young Israel
Young Israel of Detroit, Oak
Park, and Northwest, will act
as hosts for the Midwest United
States Young Israel conference
which will be held Thanksgiv-
ing weekend, Nov. 27 to 30.
Yudi Gellman and Miss Risha
Cohen will plan and co-ordinate
seminars for the weekend pro-
gram. Delegates are expected
from Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleve-
land, St. Louis and Pittsburgh.
A delegation representing the
National Council will be headed
by youth director Stanley
Schlussel.

Michigan Get UARC
Awards as Founders
At its 85th anniversary ban-
quet Saturday night, at the Wal-
dorf Astoria Hotel, in New York,
the Union of American Hebrew
Congregations will honor its 34
founding congregations.
Two of the founding syna-
gogue are in Michigan—Temple
Beth El of Detroit and Beth Is-
rael of Kalamazoo.
John C. Hopp, president of
Temple Beth El, will attend
the banquet to accept the
awards for the two congrega-
tions.
AJC President to Sneak
at Beth Aaron Series
Dr. Joachim Prinz, president
of the American Jewish Con-
gress and spiritual leader of
Temple Bnai Abraham of New-
ark, N.J., will address the adult
education series at Beth Aaron
Synagogue, at 8:45 p.m., Dec. 2.
He will also appear at various
other functions while in Detroit.
Dr. Prinz is noted for his ac-
tion on behalf of convening a
White 'House conference on the
problems of desegregation. The
proposal, which was under con-
sideration by President Eisen-
hower, was turned down by
the President on Wednesday.

3 Rabbis' Sons Follow in Fathers' Footsteps
SAN FRANCISCO, (JTA) —
Three students at the California
School of the Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of Reli-
gion, the - Reform rabbinical
seminary will follow in the foot-
steps of their fathers when they
are ordained.
Hillel Cohn, son of Rabbi and
Mrs. Franklin Cohn, is a vice-
president of the Student Associ-
ation of the California seminary.
The family came from Germany
in 1939. Rabbi Cohn is spiritual
leader of Temple Beth Zion in
Los Angeles.
David Gitlin, son of Rabbi
Joseph Gitlin of Temple Emanu-
El in San Jose, is president of
the Temple Emanu-El Youth
Group.
Maruch Kaelter, son of Rabbi
Wolli Kaelter of Temple Israel
of Long Beach, is a former di-
rector of a camp in San Fran-
cisco.
