BORIS PASTERNAK, win-
ner of the 1958 Nobel Prize
for Literature, author of the
American best-seller, "Dr.
Zhivago," translated from the
Russian, is the son of the
famous Russian painter, Leo-
nid Pasternak, who emigrated
to England after the Revolu-
tion and died there, and of
the prominent musician, Rose
Kaufman Pasternak. The No-
bel Prize winner had studied
under the great Jewish philos-
opher, Herman Cohen. His
w o r 1 d-famous prize - winning
novel has not been published
in the Soviet Union, but it
will appear in a Russian edi-
tion to be published in Ann
Arbor soon by the University
of Michigan.
Pasternak's father, JTA
reports from London, quoting
friends of the Noble Prize
winner's family, was a close
friend of Dr. Chaim Weiz-
mann and painted a portrait
of the late President of Is-
rael.
Leonid Pasternak was also
a close friend of numerous
Hebrew writers, including
Chaim Nachman Bialik, Saul
Tschenichovky, Zalman
Schneur, Nahum Sokolov and
others whose portraits he
painted. He also visited
Palestine in 1924, where his
portrait of Prof. Albert Ein-
stein is on permanent exhi-
bition at the Hebrew Univer-
sity. In 1923, a book he
wrote on Rembrandt and the
Jews was published in He-
brew and Yiddish.
But the Nobel Prize win-
ner, after being ousted from
the Soviet Writers Union on
charges of having betrayed
Soviet ideals, cabled to Dr.
Anders Oesterling, perma-
nent secretary of the Royal
Swedish Academy, which
awards the Nobel literary
prizes, that he could not ac-
cept the $41,420 prize. He
mentioned "the society I live
in" as containing within it
reasons restraining him from
accepting the honor.
Now, his life is believed
to be in danger. His home is
reported under guard.

JWV Demands Probe
of Hate Publications

The Jewish War Veterans has
called on the chairman of the
House Un-American Activities
Committee to launch an immedi-
ate investigation into the sud-
den upsurge in financial back-
ing for hate publications and
hate mongers.
In a letter to Rep. Francis
E. Walter, chairman of the
House Committee, Sam Shaike-
witz, national JWV commander,
indicated that "during the past
six months hate sheets and hate-
oriented publications being cir-
culated through the mails and
by other means have increased
fantastically."
