Synagogues Seek to Expand
Brick and Mortar Judaism

By the Oak-Woodser
In .a recent column, we re-
ferred to the gigantic growth
of Jewry physically in the sub-
urbs, indicating the new syna-
gogues which have been built
or are building in the area.
We did not mean to imply,
as several correspondents indi-
cated, that the existence of
these beautiful new structures
is the end-all.
On the contrary, the rabbis
and lay leaders of the South
Oakland congregations realize
that by building they are ac-
tually making a beginning. As
one rabbi expressed it: "We
have the foundation, now we
must build."
And he wasn't referring to
a half-completed building, but
a finished synagogue. What
he implied was that the big
task yet remains—to educate
the children, in many cases
to teach their parents and to
expand on the spiritual expe-
rience of being a Jew.
When the Bnai Moshe re-
cently laid' the cornerstone for
its new synagogue on 10 Mile
Rd., one of the stirring moments
was the march of nearly 500
students who attend the school
to participate in the ceremo-
nies.
The attendance of these
youngsters, not alone at Bnai
Moshe, but at every congrega-
tion in the suburban area at-

There's magic in numbers, and
when one does the millionth of
anything, he's certainly entitled
to recognition.
In the instance of Sam and
Sol Hammerstein, two Oak Park
brothers who have been a phar-
maceutical team now for 30
years, the magic million mark
was passed recently in the num-
ber of prescriptions they have
filled.
And, as was to be expected,
they were given honors by Le-
derle Laboratories Division of
the American Cyanamid Co.,
which gives an award to all
retail druggists filling a million
or more prescriptions "while
maintaining superior standards
of ethical practice."
Making the award was Oak
Park's Mayor Richard W. Mar-
shall, while on hand at the fes-
tivities were Virgil C. Knowles,
Oak Park City Manager, and
Lederle representatives.
The brothers began their
practice on Linwood Ave., op-

gogue realizes its obligation to
train young people and that
the youngsters themselves seek
guidance in understanding their
heritage as Jews.
Moreover, attendance at re-

as is enrollment in adult edu-

synagogues.
In the next few weeks, we
plan to take a look at con-

area to see what they are spe-

new buildings that would be
hollow shells without religious
experience and expression.
