The Center Symphony Or-
chestra is off to another good
start with last Tuesday's con-
cert at the Davison branch of
the Jewish Community Center.
Under the inspired direction
of conductor Julius Chajes, the
orchestra w e 11 rewarded the
capacity audience who had come
for the opening concert of the
symphony's season.
The concert got off to a slow
beginning with Weber's over-
ture to Oberon, but that must
have been just what the orches-
tra needed to get warmed up,
for there can be absolutely no
complaint with the remainder
of the program. Violin soloist
Gordon Staples was nothing
short of magnificent in his ren-
dition of Tchaikowski's Con-
certo in D Major, OP. 35 for
violin and orchestra. The lyric
beauty of his violin was well
backed up by the orchestra in
perfect form. Staples was called
back for a well-deserved encore.
With all the myriad record-
ings made of Beethoven's Sym-
phony No. 5 (da da da dum, da
da da dum) and with practic-
ally every orchestra in the
world having played it several
times, many mediocre, one
would think that Chajes would
be wary of it. We must confess
we were. But without cause.
Chajes and the Center Sym-
phony played this great com-
position as it must have been
meant to be p 1 a ye d. It was
fresh, vital and thoroughly en-
joyable. The orchestra respond-
ed preciSely, cued, it seemed, to
the very twitches of Chajes'
fingers and to his demanding
smile. The audience showed its
appreciation.
The next concert is sched-
uled for Nov. 18, with pianist
Artur Balsam and violinist Har-
vey Siegel as soloists. Tickets
are available at the Jewish
Community Center offices.
