NEW YORK, (JTA)—Jewish
organizations here expressed
concern this week over the news
that Tunisia and Morocco have
joined the Arab League. A re-
port that they had been ad-
mitted to the League was pub-
lished here.
The concern expressed by
Jewish leaders here was on two
counts. First, it was feared that
entrance into the Arab League,
the two North Africian coun-
tries might impose a complete
ban on Jewish emigration to
Israel.
Second, it was feared that
Tunisia and Morocco's joining
the Arab League may make the
situation of the Jews in these
countries as precarious as in
other Arab League countries.
There are today 200,000 Jews
in Morocco and about 80,000
Jews in Tunisia. Although the
Jews in these two countries are
receiving relatively fair treat-
ment now, the concern exists

here lest Nasser, who dominates
the Arab League, will convince
the governments of these coun-
tries to treat their Jewish na-
tionals in the same way as they
are treated in Egypt, Syria and
the other Arab countries.
Dr. M. L. Perlzweig, director
of the World Jewish Congress'
international affairs depart-
ment, who recently visited
North Africa, reported that the
political life of the whole region
was dominated by an intensive
Arab nationalism which tended
to express itself in regimes con-
trolled by a single nationalist
party.

Lithuanian Town

VIENNA (JTA)—.A pogrom-
like attack on Jews in the So-
viet Lithuanian town of Plung-
ian, in the Kovno district, was
reported by well informed
sources. An uncounted number
of Jews were savagely beaten,
and some were seriously hurt,
the report said.
According to the report, a
mob of Lithuanians stormed the
homes of 18 Jewish families in
the town on the eve of Rosh
Hashanah. The reason for the
attack was the classical slander
that the Jews had done away
with a missing Christian child.
Apparently the local Lithua-
nians believed the ancient libel
that Jews drink the blood of
Christians on their Holy Days.
The next day, according to
the account, the Secretary Gen-
eral of the Lithuanian Commu-
nist Party and the Deputy
Premier of Lithuania descended
on Plungian and led raids by
the secret police on suspected
members of the mob. It was
stated that 100 persons beli-
eved to have participated in the
attack on the Jews have been
arrested.
