Side by side with new hous- ing going up are the ma'aba- rot--transit villages of huts and shacks in which at least 100,000 recent immigrants to Israel still live. The elimina- tion of these ma'abarot through new housing con- struction is the number one problem of the United Jewish Appeal immigration absorp- tion effort in Israel. Dimondstein's 'Utopia' No Utopia of Reading The Utopia depicted by Boris Dimondstein in his book might have been alright for 1924, when it first appeared in a Hebrew edition, but now and in English translation, "Utopia (The Vol- cano Islan d)" (Literarische H e f t n Publishing, Tujunga, Calif.) could best be described as naive and almost childish. Certainly the literary style is not so much crude as it is primi- tive, but we hesitate to pass judgement on the author on this score, since the fault may lie in the translation, rather than in the original, Dimondstein's Utopia is per- meated with mysticism, which should be especially objection- able in a book setting forth a socialist society. There is just too much deus ex machina to make the idea he is trying to present stand on its own merits. The issue of being a Jew and the problems of anti-Semitism are briefly introduced, but since no real issues are brought to grips in this book the whole business smacks of artificiality. The main fault in the book, however, is that the superiority of his Utopian society does not develop of its characteristics, but rather depends (in defiance of Mendelian law) on the breed- ing of a race of supermen for its attractiveness. Certainly, given such a population, prac- tically any society could develop as quickly and as healthfully as does the Volcano Island one. Whatever good impression the book makes and whatever valid points are raised are quickly erased in the last few pages of the book, which are almost com- ical in their naivete. There have been better Utop- ias and better books than • this -N .L. one. Good Citrus Business Reported from Israel LIBERMAN'S DELICATESSEN Beer & Wine License; and Tavern License Included. WS THE TOWN'S BIGGEST MARKET PLACE CALL THE JEWISH NEWS VE. 8-9364 37-THE DETROIT JEWISH NEWS - Fri day, October 3, 1958 17-A-LOTS FOR SALE JERUSALEM (WNS) - The ethrog and citrus fruit family has earned Israel this year an income of 50,000,000 dollars. This income is expected to rise to $100,000,000 by 1964, according to Levi Eshkol, Fin- ance Minister of Israel. Extension of the water pipe line from the Yarkon River to the Negev with the aid of Israel Bond dollars, will bring thou- sands of additional acres under cultivation, not only for the citrus fruits, but for many other farm products. Israel's farm ex- ports last year of peanuts, olive oil, vegetables and flowers also showed increases, but with the universal demand for the much needed Vitamin C, whose main source is the citrus fruit, Israel continues to emphasize the ta- puche hazahay. the "golden apple," as the orange is called in Hebrew.
