Former Detroit Woman
Dies in Los Angeles

Mrs. Dina Leah Berlin, who
had been active in numerous
social, religious and charitable
organizations in Detroit before
moving to California, died in
Los Angeles, on Sept. 11, fol-
lowing a long illness.
She was a charter member
and secretary for 26 years of the
Chevra Kadisha of the Hebrew
Benevolent Society and was also
secretary for the Telse Yeshiva
Society.
Mrs. Berlin also was a charter
member of the Eastern Ladies
Society, Golden Rule Aid So-
ciety, Women's Auxiliary of the
Jewish Home for Aged and was
active in the olginal Jewish
hospital movement during the
early part of the century.
Surviving are her husband,
Maxwell; four sons, Julius, of
Oak Park, Stanley, of Detroit,
Alvin and Laurence; two daugh-
ters, Mrs. Freda Tencer and Mrs.
Marion Lakin; a sister, Mrs.
Hannah Dulsky, of Los Angeles;
17 grandchildren and four great
grandchildren.

Patron of Yiddish Arts,
Harry Margolis, Dies

Harry Margolis, a patron of
Yiddish literature and owner of
an extensive Yiddish library,
died Sept. 26. He had resided
at 19315 Warrington.
Born in Kiev Province, Rus-
sia, Mr. Margolis for many
years had given financial en-
couragement to more than a
score of poets and writers. He
had possibly one of this city's
largest Yiddish libraries, the
number of volumes totaling
over 500.
Until his recent illness, Yid-
dish literary people were fre-
quent house guests at his home.
The owner of the Reliable
Mailing Co., he pioneered in the
technique of occupant mailing,
now widely used, and invented
other methods used by the mail-
ing industry.
In addition to Yiddish liter-
ary organizations, Mr. Margolis
was active in the Sholem Alei-
chem Institute, Farband Branch
114 and Louis Stone Lodge of
Bnai Brith.
He leave his wife, Lillian; a
son, Alexander; two daughters,
Bertha Woldhorn and Caro-
lynne Patricia; his mother, Mrs.
Minnie Margolis; and four
grandchildren.

Dentist Here 22 Years,
Dr. Alex Kaplan Dies

Dr. Alex M. Kaplan, of 20021
Marlowe, a Detroit dentist for
22 years, died suddenly on Sept.
29.
A 1936 graduate of the Uni-
versity of Detroit dental school,
he had practiced here continu-
ously except during the war
years when he served in the
U.S. Army dental corps.
He was a member of Alpha
Omega fraternity, and was a
staff member of Sinai Hospital.
Dr. Kaplan is survived by his
wife, Florence; a son, Bernard;
his mother, Mrs. May Kaplan;
and a brother, Harry Kay.

Leon Chanukoff Dies

Leon Chanukoff, Yiddish
author, sculptor, teacher and
literary critic, died in his New
York home Sept. 24 at the age
of 65. He is the author of
Yiddish short stories, "Heavy
Skies," and has won acclaim
for his wood carvings. He
taught in schools sponsored by
the Sholem Aleichem Folk In-
stitute of New York.
