to Sabbath Shopping
The Women's Sabbath League,
formed several years ago, to ad-
vise women in the community
of the sanctity of the sabbath
and the importance of keeping
it, has issued a statement call-
ing on housewives to refrain
from shopping on the sabbath.
The statement, released by
Mrs. Milton A. Winston, secre-
tary, reads:
"The Sabbath, which is the
most sacred institution in Jew-
ish life, has been flagrantly
violated. We feel that we must
call the attention of the com-
munity to the indifference and
neglect of this Holy Day.
"Shopping on the Sabbath is
an evil which is not necessary in
these modern times—and none
among us must rest until we
have curtailed this practice.
"We earnestly appeal to wo-
men's organizations to take ac-
tion and we hope that coopera-
tion will be forthcoming so that
we can succeed in omitting the
Chilul HaShem from our midst."

Why is the Kol Nidre written
in Aramaic?
The general contention is that
Kol Nidre was composed in a
period when Aramaic was the
vernacular speech of the Jewish
population. We know that the
Kol Nidre w a s already well
known in the period of the Gao-
nim, since it is found in the
prayer books of Amram Gaon
and Saadia Gaon. It is probable
that the Kol Nidre originated in
Babylonia. The reason for writ-
ing it in the vernacular instead
of in a literary Hebrew as most -
prayers are written is that Kol
Nidre, being a formula for the
annulment of vows, was some-
thing which the average wor-
shipper had to understand so
that he would be conscious of
what he was saying, and it
would therefore have the de-
sired effect. Actually one of the
versions of Rabbi Amram's Sid-
dur has the Kol Nidre in He-
brew and it begins "Kol Ni-
darim," etc. It is a general rule
that such matters as require the
understanding of the individual
are recited in Aramaic, such as
the Kaddish, Yekum, Purkan,
and the formula for Erub.
