Technion to Conduct Research
Projects for U. S. Air Force

HAIFA—Additional research
projects will be undertaken this
year at the Israel Technion in
behalf of the U.S. Air Force.
Contracts have just been con-
cluded calling for special stud-
ies by Technion scientists in
the faculty of aeronautical en-
gineering and the Albert Ein-
stein Institute of Physics.
A number of previous re-
search projects have been suc-
cessfully conducted here under
the auspices of the Technion
Research a n d Development
Foundation, Ltd., and the new
contracts are an indication of
the increased interest in Tech-
nion's facilities shown by the
Air Research and Development
Command of the American Air
Force, it was announced by G.
Majewski, director of the Tech-
nion Foundation.
The first of the new contracts
calls for a three year research
study to be conducted in the
Einstein Institute of Physics at
Technion City by Dr. Peter
Rudman. It will be concerned
primarily with the crystal struc-
ture changes in a rocket-build-
ing metal, as high temperatures
bring about changes in its prop-
erties. The study will be con
cerned with the effect of order-
disorder phenomena on the
strength properties of such
metals as an iron-aluminum al-
loy prepared especially for the
tests in the only vacuum fur-
nace in the country.
Technion students will also
utilize the activities surround-
ing the project as a baSe for
the study of practical aspects
of metal physics. The results
of the studies are expected to
have importance to Israeli in-
dustry as well.
The second project will be re-
lated to missile design, and will
be conducted by Dr. J. Singer
of the Faculty of Aeronautical
Engineering at the Technion,

Yearbook Estimates
5,255,000 Jews in U.S.

NEW YORK (JTA)—Estimat-
ing that there are now 5,255,-
000 Jews in the United States
—a slight increase over last
year—the American Jewish
Year Book, published jointly by
the American Jewish Commit-
tee and the Jewish Publication
Society. reported that about 5.3
percent of the total Jewish pop-
ulation had intermarried.
"The rate of intermarriage,"
the report said, "tended to in-
crease among native born chil-
dren of native born parents
reaching a proportion of about
7.4 percent of the population."
Surveys in three middle-sized
cities show that between 77 and
83 percent of the Jewish popu-
lation there were native born,
the report stated, adding that
'every passing decade sees a
smaller and smaller proportion
of foreign horn among the Jew-
ish population."

Ask Australians to Assist
114 Jewish Immigrants

LONDON (WJA)—One hun-
dred and fourteen Jewish nil-
;:grants arrived in Australia in
August under schemes of the
:Australian Jewish Welfare and
'Relief Society and the United
Bias Service, says a report re-
ceived by the World Jewish
'Congress Information Depart-
ment. Seventy-two of the new
• :arrivals intend to make their
!home in Melbourne and an ap-
peal has been launched to busi-
nessmen to help in placing the
. immigrants.
Of the total of 114, there are
seven Jewish immigrants from
China. The remaining 107 ar-
rived in approximately equal
parts from Poland and Hun-
gary.

develop practical methods of
analysis giving the required
strength of thin walled conical
shells as used in missile con-
struction. The emphasis of the
study will be on the prob-
lem of buckling as a result of
the aerodynamic heating occur-
ing at supersonic speeds.
This brings to three the num-
ber of U.S. Air Force projects
being carried on at the Aero-
nautical Laboratories of the
Technion.
As the central agency on
the campus for sponsored re-
search and testing, the Tech-
nion – Research and Develop-
ment Foundation is equipped
to handle a wide range of re-
search problems for industrial
and government agencies, both
in Israel and abroad. A recent
bulletin issued by the Founda-
tion lists operations conducted
in Technion laboratories in be-
half of sponsors ranging from
large industrial plants to small
workshops. With a full staff of
scientists, and the well-equipped
laboratories of the Technion at
its disposal, the Foundation
emphasizes practical and ap-
plied research.

Hugh J. Schoenfield's 'New Testament' Printed in Paperbound Edition

The New American Library of
World Literature, 501 Madison,
N. Y. 22, has released a paper-
bound Mentor Books edition of
"The Authentic New Test a-
ment," in a new translation by
Hugh J. Schoenfield, of Lon-
don, a noted Jewish scholar.
The publication of this en-
tirely fresh rendition is based
on modern knowledge derived
from the study of the Dead Sea
Scrolls and other recent archae-
ological discoveries.
Hugh J. Schoenfield, in his
preface to "The Authentic New
Testament," expresses his be-
lief in the right and propriety
of the church to have authori-
tative versions of its sacred
books, but he holds that the
New Testament belongs to its
own time and must, as well, be
dealt with in its own way for
its own sake. He quotes the Eng-
lish publisher, Victor Gollancz,
who said: ,"There are things in
Christianity, I feel certain, that
can be better understood for a
previous understanding of Or-
thodox Judaism . . . The pres-
ent version is, so far as I am
aware, the first to give the Jew-
ish sources their proper place
in elucidating the text of the
New Testament."

Dr. Schoenfield, a contributor
to the Encyclopedia Britannica
and author of many learned
articles on religious and clas-
sical matters, worked for 30
years on this new translation
of the original Greek texts. He
points out in his introductory
matter to "The Authentic New
Testament" that the word "au-
thentic" only applies to the
New Testament itself, as read
in Greek and as accurately re-
flecting its period. When origi-
nally published in England,
"The Authentic New Testament"
received glowing reviews from

scholars both there and here.
Prof. Robert M. Grant, of the
University of Chicago, said:
"The New Testament needs
translating in every generation
and Schoenfield has made a fresh
version which really comes alive.
His work provides a m u c h-
needed bridge between Judaism
and Christianity."

It is not the voice of them
that shout for mastery, neither
is it the voice of them that cry
for being overcome: but the
noise of them that sing do I
hear.—Ex. 32:18.

Another year has come and gone since Rosh Hashanah 5718.
Fleeting hours,. days and months with their record written for
good or evil. Like hot and cold, feast and famine, peabe and
war, wealth and poVerty, the extremes of life give tempo to the
years of our sojourn. Wisdom and understanding go hand in
.hand as we attempt to examine our position in relation to one
another. We learn to choose the good and leave the evil as
experience deepens our appreciation of each other.

Israel, now in its 11th year, stands facing the future with
steady eyes. Like the swallows return to Capistrano, so Israel
has gone back as the Prophet Jeremiah so records it:

"For, lo, the days come, saith. the Lord, that I will bring
again the captivity of my people, Israel and Judah, saith -
the Lord: and I will cause them to return to the land that
I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it."
Jeremiah 30:3

And thus we earnestly hope and pray that the great
Almighty God will Bee fit to cause all men of peace everywhere
to select the good and leave the evil.
