JNF Land Reclamation

Since the inception of its
work in Israel, the Jewish Na-
tional Fund has reclaimed 214,-
255 dunams of land which had
hitherto been considered com-
pletely unfit for every agricul-
tural use. In the period preced-
ing the establishment of the
State, 45,395 dunams were re-
claimed (of which 23,550
dunams are in the hills and
21,845 dunams in the plains),
whereas the figure during the
last nine years rose to 170,860
dunams (130,405 dunams in the
hills and 40,455 in the plains).
Of the above total area re-
claimed 39% is situated in the
Hills of Galilee; 17% in Judea;
14% in Samaria, the balance
being made by the plains and
valleys of the country.
In the land reclamation and
amelioration works the JNF em-
ploys mostly settlers from near-
by villages.
The areas reclaimed do not
include swamps drained such
as those of Jezreel, Zebulun and
Hefer Valleys, which them-
selves made a total of 296,000
dunams. With the draining of
the Huleh swamps now com-
pleted another 100,000 dunams
(50,000 dunams of swampland
and 50,000 other dunams freed
from saturation) are being
added. The area of former
swampland now drained and
reclaimed comes to about
400,000 dunams.

I will be glad and rejoice in
thy mercy . . . thou hast set my
feet in a large room. — Ps.
