Prof. Martin Noth, the great
German Biblical scholar, is rec-
ognized as an outstanding au-
thority on ancient Jewish his-
tory. As a teacher and as author
of several volumes dealing with
the Old Testament and Old Tes-
tament heroes, his name is
famed in scholarly circles.
Dr. Noth's "The History of

Israel," a translation from the
German of the second edition of
his "Geschichte Israels" by
Stanley Godman," is an out-
standing work. It was published
by Harper.
In this new edition, Dr. Noth
makes considerable use of the
latest findings by explorers in
Palestine and of the facts re-

The Laws of Moses

The laws of Moses as well as
the laws of Rome contributed
suggestion and impulse to the
men and institutions which were
to prepare the modern world;
and if we could have but eyes
to see the subtle elements of
thought which constitute the
gross substance of our present
habit, both as regards the
sphere of private life, and as re-
gards the action of the state, we
should readily discover how
very much besides religion we
owe to the Jew. — Woodrow
Wilson, The State, 1890.
