Two Psychologists Write Guide as Aid to Teenagers

hood, psychosexual development
during adolescence, the mental
health problems and the mental
hygiene needs of the young
adult.
The authors' approach to
juvenile delinquency through
mental hygiene points out that
"adequate parental care during
infancy and childhood is a cor-
nerstone for any plan of pre-
vention of delinquency or for
mental health." They state that
"many educational and treat-
ment resources are required in
a comprehensive approach to
prevention and treatment of
delinquency."
Suggesting therapy for the
adolescent, they state that "in-
dividual psychotherapy, with
techniques provided by psycho-
analysis, makes possible t h e
basic emotional development."
Concerning themselves with
group goals in treating their
subjects, Drs. Mohr and Despres
have devoted three pages to a
discussion of the kibbutz In Is-
rael, and they make additional
comment later on concepts of
delinquency in Israel. On the
question of delinquency, they
point to examples of maladjust-
ment in. Israel, among Arabs
and to vagrancy in the Middle
East. "The delinquent," they
state, "like the neurotically or
psychotically ill person, is pri-
marily a problem in individual
psychology."
"The effect on the adoles-
cent experience of youth can
be studied under the condi-
tions of communal life, such
as is lived in the kibbutzim,
or communal agricultural vil-
lages, of Israel," Drs. Mohr
and Despres state.
Describing life in the kib-
butz, from infancy through the
army service of both boys and
girls from the communal settle-
ments, the authors say that "in
general, they continue to react
to the group as a whole as to
their own family." They add:
"When for any reason, a youth
is unable to adapt himself to
the demands and expectations
of • the authoritarian group of
the kibbutz, he will find life as
complicated and as uncomfort-
able as does an adolescent un-
der stress in any setting. It
must be noted that more indi-
vidualistic strivings and pur-
poses do lead a certain number
of the young people of the
kibbutzim to go their own ways,
usually after having waged a
great battle with themselves,
not essentially . different from
that waged by young people in
all Western countries in eman-
cipating themselves from bind-
ing family ties. However, in the
kibbutz, group opinion tends
to be against them in the
struggle, since they would de-
tach themselves from the group
as well as from the family. It
is evident that for the adolesc-
ents in the kibbutzim emanci-
pation must be a doubly painful
process."
Dr. Mohr spent a year in
Jerusalem directing the pro-
gram of the Lasker Mental Hy-
giene and Child Guidance
Center. He is now director of
the Child Study Center and Di-
vision of Child Psychiatry of
Mt. Sinai Hospital, Los Angeles,
and clinical professor of psy-
chiatry at the University of
Southern California.
Dr. Despress has been a group
therapist with the Jewish Chil-
dren's Bureau of Chicago and
has taught psychology at Michael
Reese School of Nursing.
