But there is still lots of
wasteland to settle—more im-
migrants to absorb and inte-
grate. There are more homes
to build—more factories to
erect—More roads to chart—

more power stations to con-
struct. To do all of these
things. more Israel Bonds must
be sold.
When I helped to launch
the Bond drive more than
seven years ago, I believed
then, as I do now, that its
great strength would rest on
the support of the large masses
of American Jews.

Accelerated development of the Negev, through irrigation
systems that have added thousands of arable acres to Israel's
productive farmland, is being made possible through the Israel
Bond drive, which must raise a minimum of $75,000,000 during
1958. Shown here is a huge cement mixer at the Yuval Gad
pipe factory, the largest pre-stressed concrete pipe plant in
the world. The pipe plant, and the actual construction of the
irrigation lines, are projects that benefit directly . from Israel
Bond investments.

Many times when reading a
quotation sounding "familiar,"
one is at a loss whether to at-
tribute it to Shakespeare or the
Scriptures. All his plays con-
tain striking examples of how
much the bard took over from
the Scriptures and how freely
he adapted thoughts and meta-
phors when it suited the frame
of his play. Here are a few
examples:

The famous, deeply philosoph
ical reflection:
1 "All the world's a stage
And men and women merely
players . . ."
(As You Like It 11:7)
is taken from Kohelet which is
more than two thousand years
old. And when the bard won
ders: "What a piece of work is
man! And how infinite in fac
ulty; in action, how like an
angel; in apprehension, how
like a God!" he quotes from the
Talmud, (T. Hagiga, 12a).
Shakespeare often compares
man's life to a tale. Macbeth
(V:5) grimly breaks forth: "Life
is a tale told by an idiot" and
King John (III:4) resignedly
states: "Life is as tedious as a
twice-told tale." And the source
of that metaphor? Read Psalm
XC: 9 and you will see.
Quotations from Shakespeare
stemming from Biblical lore
could be continued nearly ad
infinitum. "Myriad - ni i n d e d
Shakespeare" who was "not of
an age, but for all time" (Ben
Johnson "To the Memory of
Shakespeare"), in the glory of
his spirit and genius abides with
us today as strong as ever, for
his teachings are so like the
ethical advice of our sages of
old.
