Synagognges Slate Solemn Services
to Usher in High Holy-Day Season

Solemn services marking the
advent of the New Year 5719
will take place beginning at sun-
set Sunday and continuing in
conservative and orthodox con-
gregations on Monday and Tues-
day and in Reform temples on
Monday.
Listed below are the sched-
ules for sabbath and High Holy
Day services at Detroit congre-
gations:
Cong. Ahavas Achim
Sabbath services will be held
at 7 p.m., today, and at 8:45
a.m., Saturday. Rosh Hashanah
Services are planned for 6:30
Sunday, Monday and Tues-
day, and at 8 a.m., Monday and
Tuesday. Rabbi Jacob Chinitz
and Cantor Leib Lange will of-
ficiate.
Cong. Bnai Moshe
Sabbath services are planned
for 6:15 p.m., today. At 9 a.m.
services Saturday, the Bar Mitz-
vah of Larry Hauptman will be
observed. Holiday services are
scheduled both at the Dexter
building and at Northland Play-
house in Southfield Township.
Cong. Beth Tikvah
The High Holy Days will be
ushered in with mincha services
at 6:30 p.m., Sunday, followed
by Maariv, while morning ser-
vices Monday and Tuesday be-
gin at 8 a.m.
Rabbi Israel T. Notis, execu-
tive secretary of the Vaad Hara-
bonim, will chant the liturgy,
and Rabbi Leizer Levin will
deliver the sermons. His topics
are "The Lord Remembers
When Man Forgets" on Monday,
and "Education Is the Main
Object of Rosh Hashanah" on
Tuesday.
Adas Shalom •Synagogue
Sabbath services will be held
at 6 p.m., today, and at 8:45
a.m., Saturday, with Rabbi Jacob
E. Segal officiating and Cantor
Nicholas Fenakel chanting the
liturgy.
Services for the New Year
will be ushered in at 6:15 p.m.,
Sunday, while morning services
are planned for 7:30 a.m. Paral-
lel services will be held in the
main sanctuary and social hall.
Rabbi Segal and Rabbi Mar-
vin Wiener, of the Jewish
Theological Seminary will of-
ficiate and preach the ser-
mons, alternating pulpits at
both services. Rabbi Segal will
speak on "The Old Shall Be-
come New — and the New,
Sacred."
Cantor Fenakel, assisted by
the synagogue choir, will chant
the musaf services both days,

Youth services for high school
teen-agers and a junior congre-
gation service for children 9 to
13 will be held in the class-
room building, under the super-
vision of Noam Shudofsky, new-
ly-appointed youth director.
Beth Aaron Synagogue
Services this sabbath will be
held at 6:30 p.m., today, and at
8:45 a.m., Saturday. The Bar
Mitzvah of Stuart Blackman will
be observed.
High Holy Day services are
planned for 6:30 p.m., Sunday,
and at 7:30 a.m., Monday and
Tuesday. Rabbi Benjamin H.
Gorrelick will preach the ser-
mons on "Face the Future in a
World of Crisis" and "Personal
Religion." Cantor Ihil Gildin
will chant the liturgy, assisted
by a choir trained by Dan Froh-
man and led by Sol Ritter.
Independent youth services
for teen-agers are planned at
Rainbow Terrace, and will be
conducted by Sidney Noveck,
chairman of the synagogue
youth commission, assisted by-
Thomas Tannis. Jerry Zelizer,
of Columbus, 0., will serve as
cantor and preacher. Youth ser-
vices are slated from 10 a.m. to
12:45 p.m.
Other junior services will be
held in the synagogue chapel
and various classrooms from
10:15 a.m. • to 12:15 p.m., both
days, under the supervision of
Bernard Panush and Dr. Marvin
A. Last.
Beth Abraham Synagogue
Sabbath services will be held
at 6:30 p.m., today; and at 8:45
a.m., Saturday, with Rosh Hash-
anah services commencing at
6:15 p.m., Sunday, Monday and
Tuesday, and at 8 a.m., Monday
and Tuesday. Auxiliary morning
services in the social hall will
start at 8:30 a.m.
Rabbi Israel I. Halpern,
Cantor Shabtai Ackerman and
the synagogue choir, directed
by Israel Fuchs, will officiate at
the services in the main sanc-
tuary, and Cantor Eugene
Greenfield and Irving Schlus-
sel will lead the auxiliary ser-
viecs. Rabbi Halpern will
preach at both morning ser-
vices in the sanctuary and at
one service in the social hall.
Youth services will be held in
various rooms of the synagogue
from 10:30 a.m. to 12 noon, both
days. Youngsters from 4 to 12
and 13 to 17 will be led by com-
petent group leaders, under the
supervision of the youth corn-
mission.
Cong. Beth Joseph
"Israel's Present and FutuVe"
is the topic of Rev. Manuel Nei-
man, who will speak at 9 a.m.
services on Saturday. Services
today begin at 6:45 p.m.
Cong. Gemiluth Chassodim
"You Are Standing Today Be-
fore the Lord" is the topic of
Rabbi Joel J. Litke at 9 a.m.
services Saturday. Today's ser-
vices begin at 6:30 p.m.
On Rosh Hashanah, Rabbi
Litke will deliver the sermons
on "Habit and Wonder" and
"Build Tomorrow Today." Alex
Roberg will chant the services
asisted by the congregational
choir. Evening services begin
at 6:30 p.m.; morning services
at 7:45 a.m.
Temple Israel
Dr. Leon Fram will speak on
"On the Eve of a Holy Day" at
8:30 p.m. services today, when
the Bar Mitzvah of Howard
Michael Shulman will be ob-
served.
For the High Holy Days,
Temple Israel will hold two suc-
cessive services in the sanctu-
ary both Sunday evening and
Monday morning. There also
will be supplementary services
in the social hall. Dr. Fram and
Rabbi M. Robert Syme will of-

ficiate and preach the sermons.
Chanting the liturgical portions
will be Irving Rosengard and
Ramon Gilbert.
Temple Beth El
Vesper services will be held
at 5:30 p.m., today, while sab-
bath morning services begin at
11:15 a.m., when the Bar Mitz-
vah of Charles R. Federman
will be observed.
Dr. Eugene Mihaly, professor
of rabbinics at Hebrew Union
College-Jewish Institute of Reli-
gion, will preach at early eve-
ning Rosh Hashanah services
and Dr. Richard C. Hertz will
speak at the late services Sun-
day. Rabbi David A. Baylinson
and Dr. Mihaly will speak at
supplementary services in the
Brown Memorial Chapel.
Youth services will be held
Monday in the Brown Memorial
Chapel, while children's ser-
vices will be held simultaneous-
ly_in the main temple. Members
of the armed forces are invited
to attend services. No admission
card is necessary.
Cong. Shaarey Zedek
Sabbath services will be held
at 6 p.m., today, and at 8:45
a.m., Saturday, with Rabbi Mor-
ris Adler and Cantors Jacob H.
Sonenklar and Reuven Frankel
officiating, together with the
choir directed by Dan Frohman.
Parallel services are plan-
ned durin gthe Holy Day Seas-
on, with Rabbi Adler alternat-
ing with Rabbi Goldfarb, a

graduate of the Jewish Theo-
logical Seminary and present-
ly associate director of inter-
religious affairs of the Ameri-
can Jewish Committee, in
preaching the sermons.
Cantors Sonenklar and Frank.
el will officiate together with
the choir under Frohman. The
Junior Congregation for 14-17-
year-olds will meet in the Kate
Frank Memorial Chapel. Child-
ren 13-14 will meet in the Tik-
vah Chapel and 11-12-year-olds
in the small prayer room. All
other youngsters will attend as
directed on admission tickets.
Cong. Beth Yehudah
Rabbi Joshua Spiro will °Mei=
ate both at sabbath services
scheduled for 6:30 p.m., today,
and at 9 a.m., Saturday, and at
Rosh Hashanah services, to be
held at 6:15 p.m., Sunday, Mon-
day and Tuesday, and at 8 a.m.,
Monday and Tuesday.
Young Israel of NW Detroit
Services for Rosh Hashanah
will be observed beginning at
6:30 p.m., Sunday and contin-
uing at 7:40 a.m., Monday. Eve-
ning services on Monday are
at the same time as the previous
day, but morning services Tues-
day begin at 7:45 a.nri. All ser-
vices will be conducted by Rabbi
Abraham Gluckowsky and Wil-
liam Weinman.
Evergreen Jewish Cong.
The New Year will be inaugu-
rated with services to be held
for the first time in the syna-

gogue building, on Evergreen,
north of 7 Mile Rd. Services, to
be conducted by Rabbi Hyman
Agress, will be held at 6:30 p.m.,
Sunday, Monday and Tuesday,
and at 8:30 a.m., Monday and
Tuesday.
Sabbath services will be held
at 6:45 p.m., today, and at 9
a.m., Saturday, at 19911 Heyden.
Rabbi Agress wilt speak on
"The Essence of Torah."
Cong. Bnai David
Both this sabbath and on
Rosh Hashanah services will be
held in the Southfield syna-
gogue, 24350 Southfield, South-
field Township, and at the Elm-
hurst and 14th building.
Services will be held at the
same times in both locations,
this sabbath's services starting
at 6:45 p.m., today, and at 8:45
a.m., Saturday.
On the High Holy Days, ser-
vices are planned for 6:15
p.m., each evening, and at
7:45 a.m., Monday and Tues-
day. Rabbi Hayim Donin will
officiate at the Southfield
congregation, speaking on
"The Good Life vs. the Happy
Life" and "A Purpose to Is-
rael." Cantor Hyman J. Adler
and the 16-voice Bnai David
Choir will chant the services.
At auxiliary services in the
Elmhurst-14th building, Cantors
Larry Vieder and Abraham
Schachter will chant the ser-
vices. A local rabbi will offici-
ate.
