UNITED NATIONS, N.Y. —
Dr. Charles Malik, Foreign Mini-
ster of Lebanon, who has been
campaigning hard for the presi-
dency of the UN General As-
sembly for the past two years
and seemed assured of election
to that post this y e a r, was
ditched by the Arab League.
The League's political com-
mittee in cairo has nominated
the Foreign Minister of Sudan,
Mohamed Ahmed Mahgoub, for
the presidency of the 13th Gen-
eral Assembly which will con-
vene here Sept. 16.
Last year, when Sir Leslie
Munro of New Zealand nosed
out Dr. Malik for the Assembly
presidency, the Lebanese
obtained virtual promises of

Secretary of State Dulles and
other Western leaders that they
would vote for him this year.
As late as Monday afternoon
a spokesman for the American
delegation declared that the U.S.
was still committed to Dr.
Malik's candidacy.
Mahgoub is a pr ominent
Arab poet who, however, was
never particularly active in
politics until he became his
country's Foreign Minister. Last
month, when the Arab League
agreed on the resolution deal-
ing with the Middle East crisis,
it was Mahgoub who presented
that resolution to the Assembly
which subsequently gave the
measure its unanimous approval.
Mahgoub, if elected, will be the
first Negro to head the General
Assembly.
(The Lebanese delegation at
the UN denied the report of
the Arab League's opposition to
the Malik candidacy. The Le-
banese UN delegate, Dr. Karim
Azkoul, said. he was in receipt
of a message from his govern-
ment saying the candidacy still
was under consideration).

GREETINGS

LISTENING

FORMER MIDDLEWEIGHT
champ, Jake La Motta, was a
top favorite with the boxing fans
in Detroit whenever he entered
the ring here. . .He could always
be counted upon to give a good
fight, and not many will forget
his encounters at Olympia with
the great Sugar Ray Robison. . .
Jake maintains that there never
has and never will be another
like "The Sugar". . .After being
beaten in his last fight with
Robinson at the Olympia, Jake
called his wonderful mother in
New York and she said, "If any-
body had to beat you, I'm glad
it was him." . . .Jake had made
an avid fight fan out of her, and
has his pet story about the time
in Brooklyn that he decided to
become a professional fighter. ..
His mother was outraged and
never ceased her lamentations
—not even when he bagged the
middleweight crown. . ."Now
you're at the top," she begged
him, "quit before its too late.
Promise you'll s t op fighting
right now. . ."But, mama, you
don't understand," Jake pro-
tested. "I'm in the big money
now that I'm champ. With TV
and everything, I'm likely to
gross a cool couple hundred
thousand on my next bout." .. .
"A cool couple hundred thou-
sand," gasped his mother. "My
boy, promise me you'll stop
fighting in nine or ten years."

FIRST VISIT TO A neighbor-
hood bowling alley wasn't ex-
actly a triumphal affair for Sally
Goodson and Reva Marcus, but
Sally derived a certain bit of
comfort from their perform-
ance. .."I hope you noticed," she
said on the way home, "that we
didn't lose a single ball!" (or
was it a private dig toward their
golfing hubbies?)
BEST WISHES TO ALL FOR

Promote Expansion of Michigan Industry

Expansion of existing local in-
dustry affords every commu-

omy.
This is emphasized in another
in the series of advertisements
on industrial development being
carried by this newspaper and
300 other daily and weekly
newspapers in Michigan as a
public service.
This week's advertisement
features the drawing of a hand
holding a modern industrial
plant with the caption "A Bird
in the Hand is Worth Two in
the Bush!" carried below. It
stresses the importance of exist-
ing industry to every commu-
nity.
The entire ad is directed to-
