TEL AVIV (JTA)—Two hun-
dred police struggled for hours!
last week with several hundred
angry grocers and butchers who'
tried to block the entrance to
Israel's first "supermarket in a
futile bid to prevent bargain-
hungry shoppers from patroniz-
ing the huge store.
Traffic in midtown Tel Aviv
was snarled for miles while'Po-
lice, some of them mounted ;
pushed back merchants who
tried to make a living barrier to
the supermarket entrance. Later
police had to escort shoppers
to their homes to prevent pos-
sible attacks on the housewives
and attempts to snatch away
their supermarket purchases. .1
When the supermarket closed .
at 7 p.m. the first day of opera-
tions. salesgirls were on the
point of collapse from fatigue. ;
They had handled 7,000 custom-
ers. Despite the grocer protest.
it was agreed that the super-!
market had come to Israel ,to
stay with its promise of forcing
smaller stores to improve serv-'
ice and lower prices.
ULM, Germany, ('JTA) — Ten
former Nazi officials, members
of a special "commando unit"
of the SS which killed thous-
ands of Jews and others in Lith-
uania during the German occu-
paton, have been sentenced to
varying' terms between three
and 15 years fdllowing their
conviction on charges of partici-
pating in the executions. At
least 5.000 Lithuanian Jews
were massacred by members of
! the unit.
Hans Joachim Boehme. one-
time police chief of Tilsit. Lith-
. uania, headquarters of the mur-
der unit, was found guilty of
over 3,900 instances of murder
and received the maximum sen-
tence. Another 15-year term was
handed to Werner Hersmann.'
ex-security chief of the SS unit.
who wds credited with 1.650
-murders. Other sentences were
imposed as follows:

former police chief in Memel,
ten years: Pranas Lukys. a Lith-
police official, seven years;
Franz Behrendt, former Memel
frontier police official, five
years; Werner Kreuzmann, for-
mer Gestapo inspector in Tilsit,
five years; Gerhard Carstens,
former frontier police official,
four years; Edwin Sakuth, for-
mer SS security service official
in Memel. three and one-half

Thus, the first supermarket
here became a permanent part
of the economic landscape of
the city, despite protests • on the
part of retail food merchants.
It is estimated that the super-
market serves about 7,000 cus-
tomers a day. The owners of re-
tail groceries and butcher shops
feel their entire existence is
endangered by the establish-
ment of supermarkets, which
are financed by American and
Canadian private investors.
However, Israeli authorities feel
