▪ George Fingold, Mass. Gubernatorial Candidate, Dies at 49 George Fingold, Massachu- setts attorney general and Re- publican candidate for Gov- ernor of that state, died at his home on Monday, at the age of 49. Had he been elected, he would have been Massachu- setts' first Jewish governor. He had just undertaken a vig- orous campaign fight against Democratic incumbent Foster Furcolo when he was stricken. Fingold was thrice-elected at- torney general of the state and was the only Republican candidate for a constitutonal state-wide office to survive a 1956 Democratic sweep of the State government. He was born in Boston, son of an immigrant shoe-maker, a n d graduated OBITUARIES ON PAGE 38 from the Suffolk law school in 1941 and was an extremely successful lawyer, winning 47 of his first 48 cases. He was elected to the Maiden City Council at the age of 21. He served as assistant district at- torney of Middlesex County and was assistant attorney gen- eral of the state at the time of his election as attorney general. In this post he was responsible for the jailing and ouster of several corrupt city and county officials. He had gained a wide reputation as a "racket-bUster." In the 1952 election, he polled more votes that had ever been received by a Massachusetts candidate for any office. Gov. -Furcolo had let up in his campaign in deference to Fingold's recent illness, -but when his health became an issue in the election, Fingold undertook to conduct a "no cream-puff" campaign. He died shortly after beginning the campaign in earnest. It is ex- pected that Christian Herter will be chosen to take Fin- gold's place as Republican can- didate. His post as attorney general can be filled by Gov. Furcolo, under Massachusetts law. Fingold is survived by his wife, Evelyn; a stepson, Jack Lawson; a sister, Shirley; and his father, Hyman. Services were Tuesday. M. Goldoftas' Brother Dies in Yakutsk, Siberia M. Goldoftas, Detroit educa- tor and Labor Zionist leader, of 18041 Schaefer, learned this week that his older brother, Shmuel Leib Goldoftas, died in Yakutsk, Siberia, on June 21. - Besides his, brother in De- troit, the deceased is survived by his wife, son, daughter and two grandchildren who were born in Siberia.
