Hand-Made Ark
Is Grandfather's
New Year Gift

An Oak Park couple this week
is proudly displaying a beautiful
Aaron Kodesh, hand-crafted by
their grandfather, an 80-year-
old retired carpenter.
The Rosh Hashanah gift was
made to Mr. and Mrs. Wilbur
Shapiro, of 24470 Roanoke, by
M r s. Shapiro's grandfather,
Samuel Rader, of 13211 Tuller,
Detroit.
The lovely ark, made of fine-
grained birdseye maple, bears
the traditional lions surround-
ing the Hebrew characters,. all
of which were hand-carved by
Mr. Rader in a period of two
months.
This is not the first religious
object to be crafted by Mr.
Rader, who before retiring. carv-
ed furniture and frames for sev-
eral local firms.
Two years ago, he made a
similar Aron Kodesh for Mrs.
Shapiro's parents, Mr. and Mrs.
Joseph Pervin, of Toledo, 0., on
their 30th wedding anniversary.
and he also carved a menorah
for Mrs. Shapiro.
Mr. Racier came to this coun-
try with his wife' from their
native Russia in 1904. It was
their honeymoon, and they re-
mained here since that tinfe,
this year celebrating their 54th
wedding anniversary. They have
been Detroiters for about 35
years.
