Humane Slaughter Law Signed by
Eisenhower; Shehita is Recognized

WASHINGTON (JTA)—Pres-
ident Eisenhower signed int o
law a so-called humane slaugh-
ter law which sets up standards
of food animal slaughter, • but
exempts shehita from its pro-
visions.
The measure had been op-
p o s e d chiefly by Orthodox
groupS which feared that the
establishment of such stand-
ards might prove—as it has his-
torically in other countries—an
entering wedge in th4 direction
of restricting or forbidding the
Jewish ritual .method/of slaugh-
ter. Other national Jewish
groups did not oppose the meas-
ure and some aided in the word-
ing of the provision of the meas-
ure exempting religious slaugh-
ter from its terms.

Selichot are penitential pray-
ers which are recited on fast
days, on days of woe, and in the
face of danger, as well as dur-
ing a special period before the
Jewish New Year. In some rit-
uals certain Selichot are recited
in the daily prayers. Their
theme is generally that of con-
fession and pleading for mercy
of the Almighty. The general
idea as well as the basic formu-
la is said to date all the way
back to Moses, and according to
some, even to Adam, when the
Lord showed man how to come

There are basically two rea-

sons for this. One is that every
man must look upon himself as
a sacrifice being offered to the
Almighty for the New Year. By
fasting on Yom Kippur he suf-
fers a loss of blood and fat and

blood and fat were offered on
the altar. An animal which was
sacrificed in the temple of old
required four days of prepara-
tion so that one could be sure
that the animal did not develop
any disqualifying blemishes
such as fractures, etc. Man,
likewise, on the one occasion of
the year when he prepares him-
self as a sacrifice, spends at
least four days guarding him-
self against blemishes. The
other reason is that actually ten
days of fasting and penitence
are required between Rosh
Hashanah and Yom Kippur.
However, since one does not fast
on the two days of Rosh Hash-
anah, the intervening Sabbath
and the day before Yom Kippur,
four days of the ten are missing.
These four are thus made up
by the recitation of Selichot and
fasting on at least four days
before Rosh Hashanah.
Selichot must always begin
